Why A 1911?

Besides Glock can't be that reliable of a design, because I had a Kahr CW45 that had to be sent back to the factory twice for feeding issues and it still jams when I use the pro-mag magazines I got for it.

For me?

Two reasons. Logistical support, meaning you won't find a gunsmith who can't at least repair them.
Secondly, trigger. You will be hard pressed finding any gun with easier trigger to shoot well.

Those are my reasons for converting to the 1911 from my previous platforms.

Glock isn't a reliable design? Really?

I'm not a Glock fanboi, but I've understood that the reliability and durability of a Glock is well up there.

Were I to get a .45,

That implies that the only .45 that you have experience with is the one 1911. That's too small a sample to base a valid opinion on.

My Paras and by Colt Commander have been fine as has my wife's Tanfoglio in .45. That gives me 4 times as many .45s to base an opinion on and I don't consider that a large enough sample to say "all X" are good or bad.

What 1911 did you own that was problematic? What ammunition did you feed it?

I question the intent of this thread. What is the question?

The 1911 doesnt need a justification. JMB created a venerable platform as did Gaston Glock.
It all boils down to personal preference.

Me I have 1 1911, a bunch of CZ's a M9 and a boat load of revolvers.

Personal preference, plain and simple.

God bless all in there choices.

I think you missed the point, read the whole statement. I know my statement is absurd, it's meant to be, but it makes as much sense as the original premise of this thread.

I purchased a Randall 1911 because i had never seen that brand before and it was a good looking, tight fitting pistol that showed no wear other than the idiot mark. It was made in 1984 so I replaced the recoil spring simply because of the age. I had problems feeding reloads that were 200 gr flat points, but it did run the 230 gr rn that it was designed for. I did figure out that someone had modified the feed ramp and I am not sure what I will do about that, but I love the way the pistol fits and points and it is a very accurate. I will buy more 1911's in the future and from what I have read and seen the cheaper 1911's seem to be very reliable. I don't know if the Armscor folks build from the original specs or not, but they seem to get it right.

Just a matter of choice

The handgun I shoot the most is my 1911. Why, because it just feels right. I have a Walther P99 that has the most perfect grip of any handgun I have ever picked up. It's chambered in 9mm, is less expensive to shoot, but I would still rather shoot the 1911. It may just be the culmination of all the right stuff; grip angle, trigger and components that a good many people find fit their personal needs.
I don't think it's any coincidence that the P238 (a tiny version of a 1911 design) is one of the top small gun sellers. WHY, because it just feels right!

My RIA tactical runs 100%, right out of the box. Same for my Springfield EMP and Dan Wesson.

On the other hand, I've had Rugers and Kel-Tecs that have given me issues.

i've got a auto ord. 1911 us army model that shoots just fine. no jams to report outside of a bad round. azrn

There is really only one reason.

Be vewy quiet and I'll wispew it to you.

[Some people, myself counted as one, are smart enough to realize gLoCk's are no-where near perfection!]

There, I hope I didn't say it so softwy you couwdn't heaw me.

then why a 1911? Seems like they are all the time having troubles out-of-the-box.

That is a straw man argument. There are quite a few 1911s out there that work just fine from the word go. I've owned quite a few of them (as well as a few of the other kind).

Why a 1911?
--Because many of us shoot a 1911 better than anything else.
--Because 1911s come in varying sizes, frame materials and caliber choices.

A few months back Al Thompson took me out to the range to help me improve my grip on my XDm. While there he let me shoot his 1911, my first at bat with that platform. I shot the best group I have ever shot with an unfamiliar gun, bar none. Are they pretty? Aesthetically speaking, probably the best looking pistol and most blingable pistol out there. Did it shoot good? Oh yeah. Am I hooked? Nope. Do I wake up at night mumbling "Cocked and Locked"? Nope. Maybe I'll buy one some day but there are a lot of other firearms ahead of it on my bucket list. I liken it to buying a Harley instead of a BMW (bike) or getting a tattoo sleeve. Running with the herd and that's not my style.

I like the feel and fit of the M1911 and all of mine work just fine--well, the 38-45 Clerke gets a little finicky at times with particular magazines but the 45 ACPs and the 38 Supers run like a Timex (takes a licking and keeps on ticking for the benefit of the younger crowd).

Besides, the design has afforded me the opportunity to build three M1911s from parts of my choice. Very gratifying projects including the afore mentioned 38-45 Clerke.

Most 1911's should work well out of the box. The fact that you had one that did not, does not mean that all dont work out of the box. Most do work. And in my experience do work well.

However if you are asking me to choose a 1911 over a sig 220 based on reliability only...I can not do it. My sig 220 is the ONLY .45 pistol that has been 100% reliable. It is an outstanding weapon.

I've had only two lemons, and both of those were Thompson Auto Ordnance pistols that I bought very cheap, fully expecting that they'd require some work in order to do range duty.

I have an Auto Ordinance M1911 from the early 1990s that required some tuning out of the box. Not much and now it is 100%. But, I expected a little TLC would be needed as well.

Interesting, a few years ago, on a lark, I literally dropped in a worn Colt barrel (about 3000 rounds) and accuracy of the Auto Ordinance improved greatly.
