If this gentleman had a gun, locked himself in his room, and called police he might be alive today. He died for some change and business cards.

Also, 3 suspects, reason for a gun that holds more than 7 bullets.

Man dies jumping from balcony to escape home invaders

6:21 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015
ATLANTA – Police said a man who was trying to escape three home invaders died after jumping more than three floors from his condo.

Police said the suspects went up to the third floor and started kicking in the door to Greer's condo. Greer was so frightened he went out onto the balcony, according to police. "I guess at some point they did make entry and he subsequently jumped over the balcony," said Maj. Adam Lee III.

Police said the suspect's only stole some change and some business cards of Greer's, leaving several television sets and an iPad behind. According to an incident report, one neighbor told police she never saw anyone suspicious go into Greer's condo and thought the home invasion suspects may have targeted the wrong condo.

And who can't remember this girl from California who went to the roof to escape her burglar but he followed her. He was so intent on her it seems more like a burglary with rape/murder since he didn't just grab property and leave. Luckily for her she called police and they arrested him before he could kidnap her.

What should be getting in a HD plan is the likelihood of FIRE - how do you get off a third floor balcony when you can't exit the apartment door?

Same for the pic -

it would be nice to have a subforum on Life/Safety but it would be focused on non-gun issues completely, which we seem to stray into constantly in Home Defense tactics. All those guns in the closet aren't a solution when a rope is the answer. And what do you do when you need to take Grandma or Grandpa with you? Your defensive preparation failed completely.

You can't make every situation get solved by applying a gun as the answer.

Why Castle Doctrine and No Duty to Retreat are so important

I thought Georgia had both of these. And he still died. So their "importance" didn't make a difference in this case.

I don't see the relationship to Castle Doctrine or No Duty To Retreat. Both people made choices that others might make whether armed or not.

I have only heard of a few cases where duty to retreat applied in a home. I think there are some states that require it, but I can't remember. I am thinking of a case where a judge decided a person should have attempted to escape through a basement window that was too small to get through. It has been a while since I heard of that one.

I agree that having an alternate escape route is important. The man had obviously never considered any "what would I do if this happened scenarios".

This is why it's necessary. For situations like this. Whether he chose to or not, the option was available to him.

Like the 2nd Anendment and owning a gun for self-defense. Just because a man doesn't use a gun to defend himself doesn't mean the option shouldn't be available to him.

This guy obviously did not use a gun. But both situations showed why having one would help and having the correct laws allowing you to do so are important. He might not have had to jump out his window and she might not have to had go out on that roof.

And he died anyway. That's not the most convincing example, but rest assured you're among a crowd that largely won't need to be persuaded.

The title is misleading....as others have already mentioned. Georgia is no duty to retreat.

This really isn't a gun issue....what the man really needed was a rope emergency ladder.

All that aside, I wonder if there is more to this take than the article says? Three armed men go all the way up to the 3rd floor, break in, just to steal change a business cards? Really? Seems more likely that they were looking for Mr. Greer. He sure fooled them!

...or a gun.

What's safer and easier for an elderly man to use, a gun while locking his door and calling police or attempting to climb down a 30 foot drop with a rope ladder while he's in fear for his life?

It seems in the article that it seems the apartment might have been targeted but they accidently went to the wrong apartment.

A gun may not always be the correct answer but it's better than not answering the question at all.

Exactly.

This is why Castle Doctrine and No Duty to Retreat are important. In cases like this. This gentleman didn't utilize his rights, but at least he had the right to self defense inside his home and not having to retreat, especially at his age and from a 30 foot drop.

These laws are important and may save the next person. So when someone says, "Why don't you just leave your house when a burglar comes this story can be brought up."

Does GA have a felony murder rule that will see to it these thugs get life in prison?
