Why Colt 1911?

Really no other reason than they have been making them longer than anyone else. They have a reputation for using better quality materials.

Really there is no wrong answer for a 1911 these days. Most of them are dang near the same anyway. All the different manufacturers are just trying to one up eachother with the same stuff.

Tough to beat an outfit that's been doing the same thing successfully for 100 years!

Materials, quality of fit and finish, customer service, history, original manufacurer... 100% USA produced and assembled. Oh... and the fact that Colt is the 1911 and all others are clones of the Colt. Why own a clone of usually inferior quality when you can have the real deal?! Just save your pennies a bit longer. I did.

Personal preference really, no factual based reasons IMO. Most folks would tell you that S&W, Springfield, Kimber etc make a equal 1911 in all regards to Colt.

It's that silly little horse. Never understood it myself but folks will pay extra money to get that silly little horse stamped on the slide. Quality and fit and finish? Oh, please.....

There are a few things Colt does better than others. There are some things they do worse. Some of the things they do better, that endear them to buyers, are:

1) Quality materials. Including:
a) No MIM parts in inappropriate places. No bad MIM.
b) Forged slide and frame.
c) One-piece forged barrel

2) Excellent customer service and warranty

3) Very competitively priced

4) All USA made, and union, too.

So it adds up to a very competitive package in the new-gun market among the major manufacturers. A brand-new Government Model (model O1991) will rung you $750 to $775 most placed OTD. That's a very competitive price on a high-quality 1911.

If it's not a Colt it's just a copy!

I've personally owned 5 Colt 1911's and all were good quality except for one. That said I do like springer's. Everyone of them I've looked at and shot worked well and looked well made. I just like the little horse on the side of my 1911's so I keep buying Colt's. Also Colt's are 100% American made and I like keeping my money in country, even if it's going to a union :barf:

+1 to the manufacture of the pistol being US.
+1 to your money going to a union shop.

Gotta ask......

What is so great about a Union shop?

Never been part of one so I guess I would not understand but I did grow up around the Lansing, MI area and I have to say I did not really like what I saw with all that GM/UAW stuff.

I only have two reasons:

1. I like their looks

2. They're the original

Other 1911s may be fancier or more modern or whatever. But I just like the Colts for those two reasons. Not to say that any number of other 1911 producers aren't making pistols of equal or even better quality.

1. They retain their value.

2. It's heirloom quality.

Really it comes down to price and abilty to attract potential buyers with the little horsey on the slide. That being said, I really want one now too.

I'm with earl. What's so great about a union shop?
I've had a couple of experiences with guys who worked for union companies, and none of them have been good.

I could spend quite a bunch of time talking up unions, but I won't due to politics.

I don't want to stifle conversation, but I will caution against getting further into the union question.

It becomes intensely political, pretty much immediately.

When not directly political, it becomes intensely personal with some folks blaming unions for the decline of American industrial viability and other folks heatedly justifying/defending union practices.

Lets just say, if you WANT your money going to a union shop, you have your own reasons why.

If you DON'T want your money going to union shops, you also know very well why.

If you don't yet have an opinion on the matter, either research the effects of unionization historically as well as currently -- on your own time, from other sources -- or just don't worry about it and buy what you like for more practical reasons.

Few conversations seem to boil folks' blood faster ... and we don't want that.

I agree with Oro except for the union part.

That's not to say that other manufacturers don't make a good, maybe even a better gun. But I don't think you'll find a better gun today at Colt prices.

Well I think I am in the market for a production grade 1911 and I was considering a stainless steel Colt. I am attracted to the features that you get for the price. American made, forged frame and slide. I owned a 1991 for a bit and wasnt to impressed with it, but thought I would give them another shot.

I did like the positive comments about the customer service.

As for everything else being a copy, well I have some "copies" that are far superior in every facet to a production line Colt. Of course I paid more for them as well. Personally I like Nighthawk Customs the best and my second one is on the way.

"Cause it's not a .45 unless it has a Horse on it..................

Lol. You would think that is true by the way some folks talk.

I appreciate the feedback.

What do ya mean Think.................It Is True.

There's never been a better combat platform built..............1911 Gov't. Model.

Wouldn't own any other .45 and I've shot them all ......pick one.
