Why do I have these dies?

My reloading and shooting activities were on hiatus for about 25 years. When I unpacked my stuff and set up my reloading tools about 3 year's ago, I found a set of RCBS 7.65 Belgian Mauser dies. I have no idea where I got these dies or why I have them as I do not own a Belgian Mauser and don't recall every having any thoughts of acquiring one. They might have just been a freebie just picked up. I have done a fair amount of case forming for my 6mm Remington and the wildcat cartridge for my bench rest rifle, so I'm wondering if I thought these dies might be useful in the forming process for some cartridge.

So my question: Does anyone know of an alternative use for 7.65 Belgian Mauser dies?

That is kind of strange, and an odd set of dies to start with. You didn't buy them by mistake, thinking they were 7.62 (.308) dies, or Luger dies or something, maybe? I've done worse...

If I was going to get a real Mauser the 7.65 is the one for which I'd opt. Loading data suggests its a nice all around middle of the road cartridge. You already have the dies... might as well.

I don't remember where or how I got these dies, but I'm pretty sure I didn't pay anything for them. I don't own a .308 Win. (7.62 NATO) or anything close, so there would not have been a confusion factor involved. I've done a lot of brass forming over the years like making 6mm Rem. from 30-06, but I have a 7x57 form & trim die for that purpose before running through the 6mm Rem. dies. So, I'm wondering if I thought the 7.65 BM dies might be useful for brass forming, but I just can't think of what cartridge could be formed using these dies.

I have over the years purchased plenty of odd lots or bought reloaders out and ended up with many things I did not need. After taking what I wanted out of the batch I would offer the surplus for sale or build a kit so I could set up a starting reloader. Sometimes I will pay it forward just because it feels like the thing to do.

Well Mr JD in Fredericksburg it’s a normal phenomenon knowing as getting old. Our RAM is filling up and the brain is slow to boot. It’ll come to you eventually.

Maybe you bought them to impress a pretty young lady. I've done stupider things.

It was a remarkably modern cartridge at the time, quite close proportionally to the .308, and only handicapped by the strength of the actions it was loaded in. Did you at one time consider chambering an M98 to the round with a .308 bore and running it up to modern pressures?

I'm already there. What I ate for lunch yesterday is already a mystery. Why I have a set of 7.65 BM dies will probably never be understood.
