Why do so many profess hatred of the US?

Springer, Maury, Judge Judy,
and Billy Bass the Singing Fish.

Then again you also gave us Willie Nelson,
James Brown, M1911's and U.S.-style democracy,
so you Amerikanos should actually be ahead on points.

Kaylee, we think alike. For years I have referred to this anti-American sentiment as "Top Dog Syndrome". Everyone tries to challange the Top Dog, because he's the Top Dog.

I watched some British documentart on the founding of Al Quada and the Neo Cons some years ago (I can't recall the name) and I had to laugh when the "founder of Al Quaida" came to the U.S. and was offended by the "sinful" Americans...in Greely Colorado in the 1950's!!! They referred to "sinfully close dancing with scantilly clad women (Prom dances with 50's dresses, showing shoulders) and how the Americans were so materialistic they mowed their lawns every week while Muslims were sufferring so...

I had to laugh because at the exact same time (1950's) people were dancing much, much more provacitive dances in say, Argentina. Also, the Japanese are known to spend enormous amounts of time and effort devoted to their Bonzai gardens. Yet this guy didn't criticise the Argentinians nor the Japanese. Why? Becasue the Argentinians and the Japanese were not Top Dog.

To top it all off this guy wrote to his follers how greedy the Americans were and how we were not making any effort to help the poor Middle Easterners. This was at the exact same time that we were spending billions of dollars on the Marshall Plan rebuilding Europe.

Pure folly. I have no sympathies at all for their cause.

Why do they hate America

The hatred/dislike was there long before Bush was on the scene.

I agree, but you have to admit Bush and Cheney took it to new highs, or lows, depending on your preference.

That and we are a bunch of hugely wasteful dolts if you consider our society as a whole. I mean really, China should just shovel half their goods straight into the landfill where it ends up 30 days after it's manufactured and put in your happy meal or whatever else it comes in.

We are the epitome of waste and arrogance, it's really easy to dislike that, and America has that in Spades.

We Are Wasteful

Look at all the money we waste on foreign aid to people who hate us.

I wonder how much better they will like us when we cut off ALL foreign aid, bring ALL of our troops home from wherever they are, stop buying ANY of their exported goods, and turn isolationist for real (I wish).

Because that worked out so well for 15th century Chinese and 19th century Japanese? ;)

horge - thank you.
But um... so they shipped all those singing fish to you when we weren't buying them? Sorry about that. :p

Yeah, but they didn't have the power to remain isolated. Remember all those warships the US plopped in Tokyo Bay? We do have the power, and the capability to sustain ourselves, I think, so let's put a naval blockade around the US !;) Point is, they need us more than we need them. Not that we will ever turn isolationist. Oh well.

PS- OK, I'll make an exception for whoever is sending us the singing fish. Gotta have the singing fish.

It's funny, I always hear people asking, "Why does everyone hate us so much?" Myself, I figured out the answer at about age 8, with some help from my parents and teachers. They hate us for our wealth, power, and oppurtunity. They hate us because we have rights that are protected in writing, instead of privledges granted by the government. They hate us because we are the world's superpower (Top Dog syndrome, as someone else put it.)

Funny, isn't it, that an 8 year old could come up with an answer sought by so many... Many times, it's those same people who want us to bend over backwards to make everyone like us again (not that they ever did...). But then, when you think about why everyone hates us so much, having everyone like us just doesn't sound like a very appealing prospect...

Also, our nosey-ness (is that actally a word?) probably doesn't help us much...

They hate us for the

Same reason some people hate the guy driving an Aston Martin...

And yeah, they hate us for playing global cop, just like we'd hate anyone else that did it. Unfortunatley, it must be done, and as the global hegimon it is in our interest to maintain the global status quo.

The natural situation of states is anarchy, a true Hobbesian "war of all against all." Single polarity (what we currently have) or dual-polarity (like the cold war) are usually the most stable forms of global government.

Unless the rise of super-state institutions (EU, NATO, etc.) surpasses the state as the model of governance then we will continue to see a "wolf pack" like struggle for dominance between states.

If, indeed, the super-state institution (or significant economic alliance, so this rules out ineffectual bodies like the UN) becomes the model of governance then I predict we will have a short burst of multi-polarity followed by a dual-polarity (probably NATO vs Asia) with less major countries teasing back and forth until a single polarity arises.

With the rise of globalization, it's culture and where the money is that defines alliances more than geographic locality.

As each state slowly surrenders its autonomy in exchange for economic alliances I fear that we will one day discover that we have sold our nation's soul in exchange for velvet handcufs.~Nathan

Hatred of the US is not new. I was stationed in Germany and Vietnam in the early 70's and many of the German's and other european's really hated us. I think it's more jealousy than anything else.

Our cold war strategy for World War III planned on it starting in Europe. The nuclear war would have started in Germany. That might have had a little more to do with it than jealousy.

No one likes being reminded their dog ain't the biggest on the porch no more.

With the USA no longer producing the best science and math students (three cheers for intelligent (sic) design), and other nations rapidly advancing in those areas, we may need to consider whether we're still the biggest dog on the porch.
