Someone with a buncha sheepskins needs to do a study on this OC/panic/call 911/he’s got a gun, phenomena.

The test subjects would encounter a person OCing and would then be asked to answer a list of questions.

Start them off with some sort of baseline such as; Uniformed policeman. Questionnaire.
Then the fun begins…
Shabby, scruffy male. Questionnaire.
Well-dressed female. Q’s.
Casually-dressed, groomed male. Q’s.
Shabby female, Q’s.
Well-dressed, groomed male, Q’s.

Then throw in other factors such as; minorities, location, time of day, facial hair, sunglasses and others.

You get the idea.

There are so many variables at work. Conditioning, environment, education, hoplophobia, class, ethnicity, familiarity with weapons & a host of others.

I’ll give you an example. An LA family goes to Deadwood, SD. Attends the Old West Shootout reenactment. Guns galore, loud reports, pratfalls & faked deaths. Do they panic? Nope.

Get back home & mom is at the health food store on Sunset & a man’s suit coat rides up to expose a Sig. Mom waters floor tile while dialing 911. Why?
O.K. Maybe not Sunset. A lot of leather there. ;)

Why were there so many complaints about the NG soldiers with M16’s at the security gates following 9.11? Without mags inserted!?? I recall 1968 in Germany where the airport security (I think police) had full auto (with mag, thank you) & dogs and it didn’t bother my 10yo butt a bit. COOL! What’s the best way to defend against terrorist with access to full auto weapons? Baaa

I guess what I am trying to say is that the logic escapes me.

I don’t carry a gun because I am prone to violence.
I don’t carry a gun to show off.
I don’t carry a gun to make you jealous, ‘cause you don’t.
I don’t carry a gun because I’m paranoid.

I carry it because I may need it. Nothing more, nothing less. What a concept. ;)

Because it feels like a police state :(

Personally, I'm less bothered by seeing a private citizen walking down the street with an M16 than a soldier/cop.

One time we were driving through downtown Billings and saw a guy with a backpack and some sort of "black rifle." I was sorta staring because I was trying to figure out what kind it was ;) No one else took much notice as far as I could tell.

The one sorta instance where I -do- worry is when you get your mall ninja types...

A while back, there was a guy in a local shopping mall... Wearing your basic duty pants, and a military style sweater. With a handgun on his hip. Short hair, exuded "cop" or "I wanna be a cop, but I'm working security" or "I wanna be security, so I'm trying to dress like one." Let's just say he sorta tweaked my meters.

And no ID, badges, no nothing...

Now, this was back when Missouri didn't have CCW. And the St. Louis area does not allow open carry. You get a glock screwed into your ear, and charged with brandishing.

For all I knew, this clown was either getting his jollies pretending, or he was trying to pick up chicks the illegal way...

So I moseyed over to the mall desk, and confirmed that he was legit... They said he was a local cop, moonlighting, and they didn't want him to wear the ID stuff.

Sigh.
