Reasons he carries a gun, why do you carry?

If a person is interested in guns, hunting, self-defense, whatever, I'll gladly help them.

But when a holier-than-thou type who doesn't know a bourellet from a butt plate gets snotty with me, I see no reason to be humble.
Agree, lock, stock, and barrel.;)

But what does that have to do with this thread? The only holier-than-thou snottiness is in your head.

This thread is about us coming up with positive reasons why we carry, in the style of an article where the author was testifying about his/her personal positive reasons for carrying. There wasn't an anti involved until you and a few others invented one as an excuse for an ad hominem attack on a straw man (the "rebellious child" thing is a classic ad hominem, the anti is a straw man here).

I live a calm and peaceful life in what has been rated the safest community in Texas. I have not been in a situation where I would have benefited from concealed carry in over 40 years.* I really do not feel any need to carry a gun for personal protection. I carry because I can. and I want to carry because I can. It is my choosing to exercise a right that I feel is fundamental and needs to be preserved.

So OK, I carry a gun because I feel a need to preserve the right to do so.

I hope that is positive enough.

ETA: *OK, there was one time in 1995 that I found myself in East DC after dark. I did feel a need then, but as I have never been back to DC since, and couldn't have carried there anyway, it is somewhat moot.

Yes, this got me too. Wow, you guys are old- fashioned. This is called a
"LANGUAGE ARTS" teacher now!

I carry because it makes me feel secure, I'm a sick old fart that is vulnerable to young punks, Its the only way that I can defend my life, wife and property. I can still shoot the eye out of a fly at 10 yards

You obviously haven't talked to as many anti-gunners as I have,
That's probably factually incorrect (spend 30 years in California cities and schools then we will compare notes) but it isn't really germane. Your answers might be dead on for a "what to say if an anti asks why you carry" thread, but this isn't that.

What, exactly, is the point of this thread? The question was asked, "why do you carry?" Several answered, "because I can" and were taken to task (by AlexanderA, I believe) because that answer is not effective in debate with antis. That is where the anti aspect came in and that is what took the thread "off-topic."

How about this: When I saw my first REAL dead man, bloating, whistling and groaning in the sun, I said to myself, "That ain't gonna happen to me if I can help it."

My general philosophy in life is "I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it."

Definitely applies to firearms.

Because I lived 57 years 1 mile south of Detroit.

That should be good enough to carry a SAW.

Well done sir, you deserve a medal. And an RPG, just in case.

I carry for the same reason I like to keep a good spare tire in my vehicles:

Just in case.

Once upon a time, I was a Boy Scout; "be prepared."

I carry because years of training, experience, and acquired skills in the martial arts can ultimately become a futile waste of time with the pull of a trigger by a bad guy.

I carry because the odds are never 100% in favor of the most skilled defeating the least skilled in a physical confrontation.
