Someone with a buncha sheepskins needs to do a study on this OC/panic/call 911/he’s got a gun, phenomena.
The test subjects would encounter a person OCing and would then be asked to answer a list of questions.
Start them off with some sort of baseline such as; Uniformed policeman. Questionnaire.
Then the fun begins…
Shabby, scruffy male. Questionnaire.
Well-dressed female. Q’s.
Casually-dressed, groomed male. Q’s.
Shabby female, Q’s.
Well-dressed, groomed male, Q’s.
Then throw in other factors such as; minorities, location, time of day, facial hair, sunglasses and others.
You get the idea.
There are so many variables at work. Conditioning, environment, education, hoplophobia, class, ethnicity, familiarity with weapons & a host of others.
I’ll give you an example. An LA family goes to Deadwood, SD. Attends the Old West Shootout reenactment. Guns galore, loud reports, pratfalls & faked deaths. Do they panic? Nope.
Get back home & mom is at the health food store on Sunset & a man’s suit coat rides up to expose a Sig. Mom waters floor tile while dialing 911. Why?
O.K. Maybe not Sunset. A lot of leather there.
Why were there so many complaints about the NG soldiers with M16’s at the security gates following 9.11? Without mags inserted!?? I recall 1968 in Germany where the airport security (I think police) had full auto (with mag, thank you) & dogs and it didn’t bother my 10yo butt a bit. COOL! What’s the best way to defend against terrorist with access to full auto weapons? Baaa
I guess what I am trying to say is that the logic escapes me.
I don’t carry a gun because I am prone to violence.
I don’t carry a gun to show off.
I don’t carry a gun to make you jealous, ‘cause you don’t.
I don’t carry a gun because I’m paranoid.
I carry it because I may need it. Nothing more, nothing less. What a concept.
