I just finished watching "Tales of the Gun, Guns of Russia" and they were showing a modern Dragonov style gun being shot, it was semi-auto and used 10 round magazines. Wouldnt this meet all qualifications of being imported into the US ?

I think there is a current ban on gun imports from Russia, with exemptions specifically listed: Mosins, Saigas, etc.

I understood it to be some sort of treaty negotiated under the Clintonistas. There were a few Tigrs imported back in the 90s.

That's my understanding as well -- there was some sort of agreement put in place that basically was intended to keep the US from being inundated with dirt cheap Russian AK kits or US legal semi auto AKs (so we got those from Romania instead -- another big win for Bill Clinton ). The Saigas get in by virtue of being sufficiently sporterized. Anything else, I'd guess the manufacturer just doesn't care enough to jump through the required hoops to export them to the US, either in sporterized form or to then do reconversion work here like the Arsenal Saiga-conversions.

You can get SVD's and tigrs, but they're $$. The PSL's are easy to find. If the PSLs can get in I'm not sure why more SVD's can't.

I've always wondered the same thing. Are there any really nice bolt guns out there other than Mosins that are chambered for 7.62x54r?

We can get PSL's because they are from Romania, not Russia.

Russia has a voluntary restraint agreement (VRA) with the US limiting exactly which specific firearms by name are allowed to be imported to the US. The SVD is not on that list.

That's a good question -- I don't know what sort of domestic sporting rifle industry and market there is in Russian besides mil-surp Mosin-Nagants (which also seems to be the primary hunting rifle available in Mongolia, for whatever that is worth). Does Max Popenker still post on THR.org? He'd be a good source for info on the topic.

I noticed that at the bottom of that list it lists ammo banned as 7.62x25 is this because it is "armor piercing"/penetrates well?

How do we get rid of this embargo?

Centerfire systems has 54r target rifles for sale, or at least they did. However for $1,000.00 I don't see the purpose.

I think that once upon a time the biathalon was shot with the service rifle of the compeditor's country. I would assume that there were some nice Russian an Finnish rifles made back then, but I don't have any idea where they wound up.

why sit on your hands wishing someone offered what you want? Build one yourself

You could get a custom encore bbl from any number of manufacturers, you SHOULD be able to build one on a savage action (ammo feeding might be a problem)

Maybe because the .308 and 30-06 have that class cartridge covered with current actions. The Russian is of course rimmed. I doubt it's very economical to make an action specifically for that cartridge.

Oh the bittersweet irony. Russia will sell weapons to absolutely anyone else (well, maybe not Chechnya) with cash but not the USA. But terrorists and warlords? Sure!

However most of the sales are like in the movie Lord of War where it's the corrupt Generals and arms dealers doing deals under the table. Things need improvement.

Keep in mind that the 7.62x54R is RIMMED. That takes a bit more skill to make feed reliably cuz that they don't stack nice in the mag. Other than .303 British what other rimmed cartidge is routinely chambered in bolt action rifles? I agree it is a great round with plenty of cheap plinking ammo available and several sources for good hunting ammo if you know what to look for. I had a Baikal 30.06 SxS double rifle that I traded away. If it had been in 54R it would still be in my safe.

The russian's still have about a zillion mosins to sell us, all worthless to them. It's all pure profit for them. Maybe if they ever dry up something else will pop up.

At least you can still buy better quality firearms from the area like Finland, Czech republic, Poland, etc....

Part of me wishes more 54r guns were out there especially a hi cap semi but then I think about how everyone would buy one and all the milsurp ammo would disappear.

I love the sv-98 i wish we could get those here, i believe its based off of the Record or something like that.

SMG made me a DPM28 in the 54R, what a blast to shoot. I like it better than my PSL. The heavier gun really tames the round down. I am more or less in search of a belt fed 54R rifle now. Probably going to have to wait until after the new year but if the right one comes along....... you never know;)

A more modern semi auto would be nice but for now these will have to do.

I hate to defend Clinton, but I believe the supply of Russian arms being sold here was cut off by Bush Sr., not Clinton. You can thank Clinton for the (now sunset) Assault Weapon Ban and cutting off the supply of Chinese guns. Bush Sr. restricted importation of "non-sporting" arms via executive order in 1989 (or was that Federal Firearms Importation Law, 18 USC 925, also 1989?).
