Why own guns, you may ask...?

My number one obsession is competition. Not necessarily to win but just the spirit of competing.

I've had race cars, dirtbikes, pool cues, and guns. Just tools to have fun with.

70% of what guns I own are related to trap, sporting clays, USPSA, IDPA, action shooting, bench rest, silhouettes. or bullseye.

...because many, many men have died or sacrificed their welfare so that we have this right.

Why do you think you need . . . . ?

Why do you think you need . . . . ?

I don’t. Why on earth would you think I think I do?

I’m sorry, I am forgetting my manners. Before we go further, let me say, "Welcome to America! Are you enjoying your stay?"

After giving it some thought ... do you think that "Hunting" should be its own category, with subtopics below it? It strikes me that there are plenty of reasons to hunt, not all of which are quite like "sports." For example, a hunter who takes a deer every year to help fill his/her family's freezer for the winter. Or, someone who goes out hunting just as a way to be with his friends, not really for the purpose of taking game.

What do you think?

One of the speeches my Dad forced me to read when I was being home-schooled answers your question better than I can. While not word for word as close as I can remember:

There are those that see what is and ask why. I see what can be and ask why not.

I refuse to answer why I wish to do or own something. Frankly it's not for others to ask. I have an old Fiero because I like it, even though it's impractical with two kids. I make my own arrows because I enjoy it and I own firearms because they interest me. As my late uncle would say, I'm past the age of majority and off the reservation and don't have to justify a <expletive deleted> thing to the likes of you.

You've done a good job putting together your list and it could be helpful with some.

My usual answer is “Well I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I buy guns, we all have addictions of some kind and my chances of getting liver disease or lung cancer is much lower with gun purchases as well.”

This usually quiets them down long enough to explain it is an individual right and so on.
