Why the Serial number secrecy here?

To me, it's not about fear or otherwise...just I've learned a long time ago to not divulge in excess info. If the info has no credible purpose for disclosure in that manner, it's best left unsaid.

Once one understands how information can be mis-used, you learn to only say what's needed as more of a SOP more than anything.

"The fact is that if they're going to steal your gun, they're not going to do it by laying claim on your serial number."

I'm glad you know all of the thieves in the world and how they operate and what "they're" going to do. It's so very comforting. ;)

Meanwhile, for everyone who wants to know every serial number of every gun in every pic... MYOB.

Well, serial number 107xxx on my mauser C96 roughly dates it as 1912-1914 manufacture by serial number range which might be interesting or not; details beyond that are a specific ID number of personal property. I'm surprised more folks don't blur the tag numbers of their cars in posted photos. People ought to value privacy and not question why others want to keep personal details personal.

We've seen all of the arguments for and against displaying serial numbers, and this thread is beginning to fall of the high road, so let's move on to a new topic.
