From personal experiences the gun is an over priced piece of junk. I don;t know anyone that has had good success with magnum research guns.

Also, who makes a reliable gun that is chambered in 50AE?

I know its orginal purpose is to shoot through walls. But besides that its too big and heavy, might as well get a sub machinegun or a rifle.

I have had mine for 2 years, over a thousand rounds through it, never had a problem. what is your definition of "success" with a particular handgun? its a personal preference thing I suppose.

1 - it's not a combat pistol, so why judge it as one?
2 - it's purpose was not to "shoot through walls." Its purpose is to be the biggest thing in an autoloader for fun shooting.
3 - If you don't like it, don't shoot it.
and most important reason -

4 - Is fun to shoot! Two hits in the X on a target at 15 yards my first time shooting one. Accurate and vigorous, but nice to handle once I discovered the right stance and grip.

I admit that I bought one some years ago. I used it as an office decoration as it was pretty cool looking. I guess it was because it was featured in so many movies that I had to get one. Plus, at the time, 50 AE was the biggest semi-auto cartridge out there. Still, I never shot it. But once I got hold of a S&W 500, the fantasy with 50AE was over.

I sold it late last year when I found something classier to display. A engraved Python :D

huh. that goes against everything I have heard and seen from people (myself included) that have shot and owned IMI products. perhaps you need to tell us why you think it's "junk". what criteria are you judging it by?

It's glamorized as ultra-powerful pistol in video games. Some younger people are ignorant of guns except what they see in movies games. From personal experience of talking to someone about the DE over a popular online shooter, they really don't know what they're talking about and refuse to accept reality.

So the other mall ninjas will quit picking on you for not having all of your "official gear" yet.....:neener:

Seriously, I can't believe no one has taken the "shoot through walls" comment and ran with it yet.

I dont understand why people bash a DE so much. Its not a bad gun at all. The fact its glamourized as ultra-powerful pistol is a false statement? Come on, whats another gun as strong as it besides the S&W 500? I would put the 500 in its category also, why get one right? Honestly guys, we need to start appreciating guns that actually "work" and bash more on unreliable useless guns.

I think it draws a fair number of people through its Gonzo appeal, too.

It's like the cannons that shoot bowling balls, except that those are probably less expensive, are cooler, and a good deal less legal. If the Gonzo aspect is important enough to you, you will pay the price for something like a Desert Eagle, especially if you also live where most Americans do. (I.e., places where you can't blast a bowling ball across the landscape without the ATF burning your house down.)

Like everyone else has said it's a big freaking gun & has that coolness factor. I wouldn't mind being able to brag that I have a 50AE Desert Eagle. But I'd probably take the 500 S&W over the DE

Because they saw it in a movie. I knew a kid who had Desert Eagle .44mag. I had a S&W 629 at the time and he proceeded to tell me why my gun was old and out of date, and how superior his "auto" was to my old inferior revolver. Well, needless to say, after he had 2 jams in one mag and abysmal accuracy, and my 629 put a full cylinder into 2" at 15 yards, he just did the smart thing and shut up.:D

Tell me a little about your "personal experiences"

I have a 50 and 44 caliber DE and it is by far the most fun shooting pistol I own. The operation is what makes it special. I can shoot it all day and not become any more fatigued than I do with any other handgun I bring to the range. Only bad thing is the cost of the ammo but I reload and it's not that much of an issue anymore.

My gun has been, for all practical purposes flawless. Its as accurate as it is reliable. So again, tell me what problems you have had, what you have tried to correct them, and I'll try and help.

I know its orginal purpose is to shoot through walls.

Everything I know, I learned from Counterstrike!

Anyway, Desert Eagles are reputed to be very accurate. The traditional big bore hunting handgun is a revolver, but some people do use Desert Eagles for hunting, long-range silhouette, etc. Nothing wrong with that, really. You get slightly better efficiency than the same caliber revolver because of the lack of a cylinder gap, and quite a bit less felt recoil because it's a gas-op.

I've never heard anything bad about their quality

They may be big, expensive and impractical but people buy them generally for fun and for the big boom.

Overweight?

Don't DE's weigh, inch-for-inch of barrel length, about the same as S&W X-frames?

Whenever I see someone (especially a woman, or a man my size) shooting one of those in a movie, I just assume it's a plastic reproduction, not the real (heavy) thing.

Don't get it

From personal experience, no complaints about quality or accuracy.

Its' just not to everyones' taste; (neither is a Hummer) but it is and does everything thats' claimed for it.

Your degree of distaste doesn't jive with my experience.

Cheers, TF
