Picked up a K98K from Wideners today - nice 42 code (Mauser Oberndorf), dated 1940 with matching bbl (markings ground from bolt - Wideners says markings not peened, which they are not on bbl & receiver, so I suppose this is a logically true statement). Typical RC mixmaster but with large font import markings on the upper left side of the rear sight sleeve in prominent view. I will cold blue the markings to try to minimize the glare, but I am not real pleased by that. On the other hand, the bore is VG or better with no apparent pitting and the look of a nice typical military bore (GECO bbl dtd 1940). I'll clean it up & remove the red Russky stain & varnish from the stock in the next few days and see what I've got. Will get before & after pics, but you know what it looks like - old Mauser war bride, but a piece of history that calls out to me. I'm a sucker for an old military weapon with a story hidden within...

I am glad you posted about these. I got the email from Widener's about these last week or so and am having a hard time avoiding buying one. The condition of the bore was the main question I had about them.
Thanks for posting this. I'd like to have one to go with my 1943 SMLE and K31s.

Nico
