I have to hunt with copper bullets in CA.

I just want to know if I'm dreaming about hunting boar with 225 grains out of a Marlin 1894?

I have a 270 win, but I would just rather hunt with this gun. these will be Corbon factory loads 1350 fps/911 foot lbs.

Thanks,

Are you talking about solid copper, copper jacket, FMJ, or hollow point ? I know Corbon makes great ammo but they also have different bullets for different uses.

This is solid copper. There can't be any lead at all in it: anywhere. Yes, I live in the socialist state of CA...

Wild boar? You mean hogs, right? I always laugh when I read about people hunting the dangerous game of lions, bears, rhinos, and....wild boar.

If you use a hollow point, that Marlin will be fine. I've killed hogs with 30-06, .243, and .357 and there wasn't a whole lot of difference. Of course, there was this one time I was turkey hunting with a .22 mag, and out came a 400 pounder....that took the whole 15 round mag to stop that guy.

I hadn't seen that ammo yet. I'd be really interested in testing some out myself. I've seen firsthand whay Corbon pistol ammo does. I've also seen deer hit by 12 gauge Coppersolids. I don't think a hog would stand much chance against a Corbon solid copper hollowpoint if you do your part. I wouldn't feel undergunned with them.

Come to think of it, are those the DPX bullet ?

That is the DPX.
"The latest handgun ammunition product from Cor-Bon, as I write these words, is their DPX line. DPX is advertised as high energy, deeper penetrating and environmentally friendly handgun ammunition. Its Barnes-X solid copper hollow point bullet typically penetrates deeper than conventional JHP bullets of any given caliber and sectional density. This deeper than normal penetration results in a larger permanent crush cavity, as has been thoroughly demonstrated by testing in 10% ordinance gelatin."

Read about it here. http://www.chuckhawks.com/cor-bon_DPX_pistol.htm

I have shot some pretty big hogs with my 44 mag SBH 10'' revolver it kills them well. You will not fare any worse with a rifle so go for it. I have also killed quite a few with my .22 Rossi pump rifle but my feeder is only 25 yards from my stand. If you take neck shots accurately it doesnt take that much to drop them. The main benefit of neck shots is not having a thick shoulder plate to get through it also makes you take your time and line up a humane shot. The fringe benefit is not busting up anything in the body cavity which makes butchering a little less nasty.
Good luck and above all be safe.

762 thanks for the Hawks article. I always like reading him.
TBran thanks for the reminder on safety! That's always important.
My boys (10 & 12) just passed their hunter's safety class: they won't be with me on this (a friend won a lottery spot and invited me! Can you say woo hoo!?). But we'll be after the gobblers in Nov.

Glad to hear you are gettin the boys up to speed hunting is one of the last great things we can do with our kids.
WooHoo is right im just gettin geared up down here and it will be a very productive year.

You're welcome. Good luck with the hunt and be safe. That article popped up when I searched DPX. I enjoyed reading the article also. Peter Pi Jr. is a (former) local done good. Bought my first gun (and many more) from him many years ago. I carry Corbon in my 1911 daily with complete confidence in them.

LOL! You must have visited CA!
Thanks again!

I see no problem with the Corbon copper ammo and taking down wild boar. I have used my 44 mag revolver and made shots on them at 40-50 yards and they did not go far and the ones shot in the head/neck went down instantly. 44 is enough gun, just make well placed shots.

Gots to keep the lead from lowering the IQ of condors in Monterey county. That .44 copper load will drill any boar you can get within it's 100 yard range. The .270 with Barnes 150 grain x bullets will do it 3 or 4 times as far away however.

.44 Mag outta a rifle is more than fine for your hogs! My brother-in-law used a 20" Browning Lever Action in .44 mag for such.
