Timely Warning Notification of a Criminal Incident November 5, 2007

Anyone else find the name of the warning somewhat newspeak, due to the fact that, well, there's really nothing at all of significance in the so-called "timely warning notification"? (And what, exactly, is a warning notification?) Call the moral police, because someone has abused their word processor!

The threat was in the form of a graffiti message written on a wall in the Allen Library. The message indicated that the person(s) intended to commit an act of violence with the use of a weapon. The time period stated in the graffiti was vague, but reference was made to the month of November.

Surely I wasn't the only one who thought, "Gee, I bet some dumb Humanities professor stumbled upon the Guy Folkes poem?

“Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder, treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.”

I guess I can see how that might be construed of as a "threat" - by the ignorant. Coincidentially, it kinda went along with the whole "Ron Paul groups are using Guy Fawkes sound bites to fundraise and are having (or did have, as it sits currently) a massive fundraising drive on the 5th". It would not surprise me if it showed up on the morning of the 5th and the shmucks didn't get around to sending out the notice until later in the day.

for those interested in carrying concealed on UW (or other college) campus, there are NO RCW's that prohibit it. (read RCW 9.41.050) the state allows universities to write their own WAC's and UW has a rule against carrying firearms http://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=478-120-020

(f) Possession or use of firearms, explosives, dangerous chemicals or other dangerous weapons or instrumentalities on the university campus, except for authorized university purposes, unless prior written approval has been obtained from the university chief of police, or any other person designated by the president of the university (see WAC 478-124-020 (2)(e)) (legal defense sprays are not covered by this section);

BUT

the very last section of the Code of Conducts states:

(6) Nothing herein shall be construed to deny students their legally and/or constitutionally protected rights.

in summary, there are no laws barring you from legally carrying on campus. only UW WAC's. if you do carry and are caught, you will be subject to disciplinary action by the school but if you want to turn yourself into a test case and take it to court, one may have an outside chance of proving that CCW on UW campus is perfectly legal and not against the WAC's.

I was always told that it is illegal to ccw on colleges in Washington. I am applying to UW for graduate school. Its good to know that I can carry while there but I will probably contact a lawyer just to be sure.
