will it kill a wild hog ?

I would not use either .22 or shotshells for a chance at a hog. I know a guy who used a .22 and ended up shooting the pig about 10 15 times before catching it, chased it probably 200 yards through all kinds of thick stuff, and then administering the "coup de gras" with a big knife. Luckily, it was a small sow approx. 80 to 100 lbs.

I was pi$$ed and have never hunted with that guy again !

Tasted pretty good though !

Just in case anyone didn't know this, the reason for the dumb rules are to stop deer poachers. Game Warden: "You're poaching deer out of season!" Hunter: "No, sir, just hog hunting with this here centerfire." Game warden leaves. Hunter poaches deer. So if you're ACTUALLY hunting hogs, not deer, then the warden will be all about wanting you to clear out the hog population. That is why (IMO), the old "toss the slug round if confronted and show they warden your BB shot" trick is one of those no-harm, no-foul activities - IMO. :) Ringing the shell is another idea, as mentioned....
