Just got my newest .30-'06, and need to stick a scope on it. I am going to buy a ProStaff 5 3.5-14x40 scope from my LGS, but he doesn't have the mount/rings I want - DNZ low mount on a Tikka T3 Lite. I figured I will order the mount from Midway and the scope from him, but he's trying to convince me that the clearance won't be there. It just so happens he doesn't carry what I want.....trying to push Leupold rings on me, and I say "no".

What do you all think?

The DNZ site says
"All of our low mounts will fit plain bell 40MM objective scopes and some 44MM objective scopes. A PLAIN BELL scope is a scope that does not have an adjustment ring on the front end of the scope."

Are you going to use this gun for hunting game? If so, I won't have an adjustable objective feature on my hunting glass. Too much chance of it not being set to the distance the animal is at, & it moves while fussing with the scope. Or you take a shot with a blurry sight picture. I won't suggest a scope to you, that's your choice, but I don't hunt with anything over 10X for the A/O reason. Here in Montana, the long shots do exist, but I've also never felt the need for more than 10X on a game gun. Varmint gun, oh yeah, big X numbers & A/O, but nobody gets too upset if the p-dog moves, another one'll be up shortly.

You might also want to talk to Talley for mounts. You can talk to them, tell them the scope & rifle & they'll tell you the rings. And if they're wrong, they'll take 'em back, no questions asked & send whatever is needed. I got to know them when they were in Glenrock Wyoming before they moved back to S. Carolina.

Well...if the factory info says;

Murphy's Law has great potential here!:D If your scope bell is a 44mm, I would recommend going to the medium height rings, if only for lessening the aggro factor when you discover the low mount won't quite fit. :cuss:

Just my opinion, not to criticize a person's scope "needs", but , for hunting and even varmints, the adjustable optic is not necessary. It's just something else to fiddle with.
My first deer hunt, I was with a friend, and he was a bit anal...his scope was set at 7X or thereabouts, when he saw a respectable mule deer. He would have his scope set on 3X...by the he got finished fiddling the mulie was heading for the next zip code in high gear! :(

If they (it) is at very short range, maybe like 10-20 yards, then, you just put the blurry crosshairs on the blurry furry critter, hold under for scope height, and touch 'er off! ;)

Power? Whatever you want.:)

I get that, but I have a dilemma. I have several rifles, but never one that was really lite, or stainless / synthetic.

I bought this Tikka T3 in stainless to carry around my land which has a lake on it. I may take shots at groundhogs at 250 yards, or a deer at 40 yards. Sometimes I will sit on top of a hill and shoot snapping turtles in the water at 150 yards.

I have varmint guns and "large" game set-ups, but I have a soft spot for the .30-'06 and want this to be a do it all rifle, because it can. I hate worrying about keeping walnut and bluing pretty all the time. I thought that would be a good all purpose set-up?

Wow6599;

I've got the Tikka T3 in synthetic/blue in .30-06 myself. A good scope in the 3-9, 3.5-10X range is all I'd think you'd need for the purposes you've stated. Mine wears a Leupold tactical 3-9X mil-dot. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest the Zeiss Conquest 3-9X either if you don't like mil-dots. SWFA is currently selling the Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10X mildot for $399.95 or the same in silver w/BDC for $349.95. Personally, I don't like the BDC, tried it & found the mil-dot system works much better for me.

I will tell you that I have several Tikkas & they all shoot very well. Good luck, you're gonna have fun with it.

Good choices! One of the potential problem my friend had with his scope was addressed by David Petzal in the TV program "The Gun Nuts" this week.
He called it "4X, dumbass!"
Seems like he was referring to when we sight in and leave the scope powered up to the max. and forget about it. He recommends after proper sight in, and before memory loss sets in, to always turn the power ring back to 4X, which will give sufficient magnification and field of view for most any shot.
