So, I am rather curmudgeonly and generally disinterested to hostile about most "new" cartridges introduced. I am also no fan of the AR.

So, it was with a reasonable degree of surprise that, upon reading the Barsness article in the most recent edition of Handloader on the Wilson Combat 300 Hamm'r, I found myself somewhat enthused.

Upon further analysis, my enthusiasm seems to stem from Barsness' atypical honesty (atypical in a gun writer, not Barsness in particular!) in assessing the cartridge. Rather than tout it as the latest and greatest, whizz-bang, wonder, he was remarkably candid in pointing out that the 300 Hamm'r in an AR15 rifle is essentially just a modern take on the 30-30 in a Winchester 94 or comparable lever gun. Since I have long held the view that the 30-30 is an ideal cartridge for shooting hogs that only falls down in night hunting due to lever guns being far from optimal for mounting thermal or other night vision optics, Barsness' argument makes a great deal of sense to me.

While one of our members, who has posted a number of videos of his very successful activities, makes an unassailable argument on why the 6.5 Grendel and highly frangible varmint bullets work best for him in his role of eradication, a .308 150 grs bullet at 2500 fps is otherwise an ideal combination on hogs, in my opinion. One could argue that the 300 BLK with heavyweight bullets and suppressed is even better, but in an AR action, the noise of the action cycling in a semi-auto will send the piggies running anyway so, the stealth element of suppression is a non-issue except as it may mitigate such community concerns as may exist about night hunting.

In any event, the article has me interested. So, does anyone have an AR15 in 300 Hamm'r? If so, your views and impressions would be most welcome. Thanks.
