does anybody know about winchester 296? there is not much reloading data on this powder, trying to find out if it is compatible with 44 mag sjsp 240 gr magtech or 44 cal jhp 180 remmington?

as per Hodgdon, W296 is the exact powder as H110 and uses the same load recipes. Like H110, it needs a magnum primer and a heavy crimp for proper ignition and consistency. Works well for upper end magnum loads, but cannot be safely downloaded from published starting loads. H110/W296 is my go to powder for .44mag hunting loads. 23.5 grains and a 240grn Nosler JSP/JHP or Hornady XTP.

The max decrease in working up a load with 296/110 is 3 percent. This is powder for max performance.

WW Recommended Loads

Winchester's recommended load from their manuals in the 70's on up to today is 24 gr for 240 gr jacketed and 25 gr for 240 lead, with the ever-present caveat that loads should not be reduced. Conventional wisdom and experience has shown that "never" isn't an absolute, but I tend to use those loads without variation. There are newer loads for heavier bullets that were never around in the old days, so someone has to be experimenting (carefully and with sound technique, for sure). And there is a ton of data available - all of the handbooks I have seen list it (save the proprietaries, such as AA, Vihtavouri, etc). Midway sells them all - check it out

WW296 & H110 are good powders for wringing the most out of a magnum handgun. Mucho muzzle flash, however. Downright spectacular in low light. Not for home defense...unless you're trying to temporarily blind your attacker.

Yes, I'm ashamed to say that I do, we've been having an explosive high pressure relationship for years. I love it so much that I'll even sprinkle a little on my Wheaties for an extra blast in the morning. Oh, wait... don't do that!

As said above, W296/H110 are great powders for full pressure/velocity Magnum loads. Just be sure you don't download that powder and be sure to use a Magnum primer if you want to insure proper and complete ignition. You can also use Hodgdon Lil'Gun and achieve the same high velocities but with less pressure.

The Hodgdon Load Data Site has the data you are looking for. If you can't find a listing for W296 use the data for H110 since they are the same exact powders. (verified by Hodgdon /IMR /Winchester)

296 is one of the most widely used magnum handgun powders available. Search long enough and you will find plenty of data available for use with various 44 magnum loads. I've used it with the 180 Rem you mention with excellent accuracy results.
