All.... I have a marlin 44mag lever action rifle. NONE of my reloading books have info the rifle, just for 44 mag revolvers. Only my OLD Hornady book has the rifle info, but I guess 296 powder wasn't invented yet! My newer books have 296 listed, but only for pistol use. Does any one out there have any info on using 296 in a 44mag for the rifle? Thanks!!

The pistol data will work fine. Also go over to Hodgdon's website there is lots of current data for both 44mag rifle and pistol. Remember Winchester 296 and Hodgdon H110 are the same powder so that is even more data.

Loads are the same for both, you'll just get a little more velocity from the longer barrel. Speer shows loads in both revolver and rifle, which is nice because it shows the velocities from the longer tube.

Thanks for the help. I don't have any h110. I see hodgdon has44mag listed, but only in pistol. I have a 2018 version of their powder booklet. I'll just try the pistol recipe and go from there.

H110 and Win 296 are the same powder. Some manuals may only list one or the other.

Handgun data is the same as rifle data.

Hodgdon’s data is available online. 44 Mag is included in both the handgun and rifle sections, including H110/W296 data.

I just looked on hodgdon's site and they didn't even list 296 for a 240 gr bullet. They called for a starting load of 19.4grs of 296 and a max load of 21.5 grs. for a 225 gr. bullet. MY 2018 book starts at 23 grs and goes to max of 24grs. for the same load. Now what???

H110 and W296 (as Troy said) are the same powder. So data for H110 will work for W296.

Pistol data and rifle data for .44 Remington Magnum is (with a few possible exceptions) the same. Lyman 50th even has the same load data charts in both section. The only difference is barrel test length and velocity. Certain loads for falling block action may have higher pressures, but the pistol data will work for a rifle.

Use the H110 data, which IS present. H110 is the EXACT SAME POWDER as Winchester 296, simply with a different label on the container.

My dumb.... I replied to your note before reading the top part about using 296 for 110. Thanks!

Hey guys, on another note. I have a Lyman ultra sonic cleaner. Are there any homemade recipies for cleaning solution?

I'd love to whack and stack coyotes! And my kids are all grown, but I still love watching those old cartoons!

I use a slight variation of the “clean and shiny” process from 6mmbr.com in my Hornady ultrasonic bath:

• 50% white vinegar in water for 20min
• Hornady ultrasonic solution 20min (1 shot glass in 4 red solo cups of water)
• 5min water only
• Rinse in hot water
• Frankfort Arsenal drier for 1hr

Comes out clean inside and out, including pockets.

Ill have to try that, ive got a really nice lab grade usc and never use it....besides seeing if it would hurt cerakote and duracote.

Have to say I am impressed with how patient responders were with this question, waiting for it to click.

I would add that one should not expect too much for loads with lead bullets and W296/H110. I learned to use gas checks or best with semi-jacketed soft points. Also that magnums do not need to be loaded at full power.

Thanks ! And... happy Thanksgiving

Load data is based on the cartridge
Regardless of what it is shot out of
44 mag is a pistol cartridge just like 38 or 357 mag
