My father has a pre-64 model 70 Featherweight setting in his attic. Does it have a stripper clip slot? The way I see it, It's either yes, no, or maybe, right? I have heard of some pre-64's having clip slits, but i have no idea if it's all of them, or just some.

This idea just came to me, and the thing is 40 miles away, so I can't just go check.

It has had a scope on it as long as i have been around, so I have no idea.

If it does, I may ask him if I can have it as a project gun, to work my self up a nice scout rifle.

It will be amazing!!

Thanks

The attic, no. The safe, yes. I'm not sure how that is relevant.

Thanks Jim. I guess I could have it slotted, but if I'm doing that, I would rather just get an old model 700 with iron sights

Before you start tinkering on a pre 64 you need to look at what they are selling for & get it out of the attic IMO.

And so another fine rifle bites the dust ... :(

Supposedly only the Pre-War designated Model 70's have the stripper clip slot.
However one of my "pre-wars" I discovered by research, was manufactured in 1946, probably to use up the supply of pre 1941 actions.
A Pre- '64 Model 70 is a very desireable item and you would be hard pressed to purchase anything made today to compare with it.
It would be wise to find another "project "rifle.

The transition sporter models made after WWII from 1945 - 51 may have clip slots in 30-06 only, or by special order.

I believe all the pre-64 Target & Bull Gun models had clip slots.

The last thing I would do it modify a pre-64 M70. They are scarce enough as it is - sell it to someone who wants one and buy yourself whatever base rifle you like to modify.

I'd leave it as is. And the attic is a horrible place to store guns. The daily swings in temp and humidity are actually magnified in an attic.

rcmodel,
My particular rifle is in fact a .30'06 and for years, because of the clip guide,we considered the rifle a Pre - War.
Thanks for the update.

I saw it a couple days ago, and it is in "perfect" shape for a 50 year old hunting rifle.

What I do with it is mine or my fathers business. I don't care what you think of me doing it. I am tempted to weld a few tactical rails to the barrel, just because of everyone's unsolicited advice. Please try to keep this thread on topic. If you really want to save it that bad, start making offers.

To everyone who actually answered my question, thank you. Even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear.

With no clip slot, I won't be making it into a scout rifle.

Maybe a sniper rifle is in order :neener:

Very well. Only trying to help here. You certainly have a right to do something stupid if you want to. I'd love to see pictures of tactical rails welded to a pre 64.

Common in M70s,introduced 1955[the .243, not the gun!] Leave it as is,but don't be afraid to shoot it. I hunt with pre 64s[in Alaska] but I take very good care of them. If you wish a striper clip slot,I think the Mauser 98 military rifles had them.

Wow, thank you for your permission.

Jim, thank you for your help. It's good to see that some people can actually contribute something constructive, and not just make pointless judgments.

I'd give my left nut (or a heck of a custom Remington .308Win. 700 or 600 Scout rifle) for a good .243 Featherweight.

First, a suggestion not to alter a pre-64 Model 70 is good advice.

Second, YOU introduced the idea of altering it. That makes polite comments about whether or not that would be a good idea both appropriate AND on topic. There's no requirement that people can't make comments that you don't want to hear.

No one has questioned your right to do what ever you like, they've just given you advice. If you do alter it, then be sure to remember years from now, when you finally do sell it and it's worth a lot less than it would have been, when the buyer shakes his head and says "too bad somebody fooled with it" just remember that we told you so.

you really should do the rails - 'bout time somebody brings these rifles into the 21st century. make sure you shim the front of the rails so they will be level. the barrels are tapered and if you don't shim they'll look a little funny.

if you are serious about selling it, shoot me some pics and let's make a deal. i'd prefer to do the deal prior to your modernization efforts, though.

last, if you need the clip slots, look at about any mauser 98 - they got 'em. i just so happen to know where a complete turk is, bayonet and all... maybe you rescue my turk from the custom gun maker and i'll rescue your m70 from the tactical rail crowd... seems fair...?

Wow, thank you for your permission.

This isn't about permission. People on this forum are giving you what they feel is their honest opinion on the matter. If you are not able to accept advice politely why pose a question on an open forum? The general cosnensus is there. You can ignore any advice given here but you cannot govern what people write in response to your ideas.
