Winchester 94

A good friend of mine recently gave me an old Winchester 94. He never fired it. The firing pin spring seems to be missing or broke. If you hold the rifle muzzle up or muzzle down, the firing pin just follows the direction of the muzzle. Does anyone know how to get to the firing pin and spring? Thanks.

Do the 94's have a spring? I have a copy of a 92 and it doesn't have a spring.

What you describe is normal on the 94.

There is no firing pin spring on the 94, the firing pin is free-floating.

Im still concerned on what you hearing the only really spring i know of is in the main magazine.

Here is what i would do. Get some 30-30 shells. load them in the magazine. Try to see if its making noise. i would not be concerned about small noises as i would be on loud noises. then chamber a round. For safety make sure you lower the hammer. Practice this with out ammo first. Then see if it makes noise.


now back to the spring. Depending on year and model some of this information may be different.

Pull down the lever. With ammo in the magazine the first round will drop and will be at an angle. The reciever goes all the way back pulling the hammer back. Now pull up the lever. The round is chambered. On some model 94s you have to grip the lever fully as there is a little button on the bottom. If this button is not pushed in the trigger will not pull back. Others have a transferbar. With the lever pulled back. When the trigger is pulled the hammer simply hits the back of the firing pin. There is no spring. Something may have fallen within the works of the gun. Maybe a spent primer. but the only spring is the spring for the magazine.

Whatever you're hearing is perfectly normal on a 94.

The trigger flops around, and the firing pin slides back & forth.

They are supposed to rattle when you shake them, or there is something wrong!
