Winchester Mod 12 gunsmiths???

Sure could use some help here. A friend had a serious mishap (to the gun) with his pre-'64 Mod 12 pheasant hunting in S.D. over the weekend. Fell with an open chamber and got some dirt in there and THOUGHT he got it all out, then the next shot split the barrel! I've checked with Numrich and they have Mod 12 barrels BUT, is there any difference in the 'pre' and the 'post' '64's ?
If there isn't and he gets one from them, should it be 'fit and headspaced' by a gunsmith? Or is that a big............DUH!!!

p.s.- any better place than Numrich for a barrel? They want $107 for it. Did searches and didn't find much else.
