Good morning all. I have recently acquired a Winchester Model 100 carbine in .308 caliber with two factory mags. It functions flawlessly, has a perfect bore, no rust, but is definitely not in collectable condition due to a refinished stock and loss of blueing. I picked this up solely as a hunting rifle.
I traded a Rem 1187 12ga for one in my teens which I killed my first whitetail with. I lost it and everything else I owned in a housefire back in December of '03 and after searching for that smoking deal, I have finally been able to replace it.
A few questions if you don't mind: 1) Is there anyone who would have a 1pc picatinny style steel scope mount for it? I've tried Midway, Brownells, Numrich, and most of the scope manufacturers and have come up blank. 2) The stock refinish is poor to say the least with brush marks evident in the new varnish. I'd like to remove the new varnish and just finish in linseed oil. Can you recommend a varnish remover that will enable me to wipe off the varnish without having to sand the stock? Again, the blueing is only about 80%, so I'm not worried about affecting collector value. 3) Does anybody know of anyone who makes a 1-1/4" sling swivel set so I can string up a standard military leather sling on this rifle - or anyone other than Uncle Mikes who makes a 1" military leather sling? 4) It currently has a Tasco scope which the previous owner seems to have used a chisel to tighten the mount and ring screws with. I'm looking to place US made optics on this and have pretty much settled on Burris - anyone have experience with their Short Mag or Fullfield II scopes? 5) Is Winchester or FN still honoring the firing pin recall and replacement and does anyone have details? Thanks for your time and have a great day. I greatly appreciate your knowledge and insight.
