I've just arranged to buy one of these in .30-06. From what I can gather, it's about 40 years old, and was Winchester's budget alternative to the Model 70 at the time.

It seems pretty solid, and has a really smooth action and a nice trigger pull. I'm not overly keen on the stock though. I believe that it's beech with impressed chequering, and doesn't look too impressive.

As such, I can imagine that I'd like to upgrade the stock at some point. Does anyone know if a Long Action Model 70 stock will fit it? The action looks to be exactly the same. If so, any idea if it's possible to fit a hinged floorplate to a rifle like this that originally had a blind mag?

Does anyone have any info on, or experience with the Model 670?

Cheers

It can be done, but it probably doesn't make sense from a money perspective. The older guns with floor plates came with 2 piece bottom metal, newer guns come with 1 piece bottom metal. Either stock will bolt to the rifle, you just have to buy the correct bottom metal for the stock.

Most older used stocks you find will be 2 piece design, which means you'll have to locate some used 2 piece bottom metal.

Most new stocks, aftermarket and factory, are designed for 1 piece bottom metal. Expect to pay at least $100 for the metal if buying new. Used is going to be a little harder to find, but is out there. In fact I have a set of SS 2 piece bottom metal for a Long action I'd sell.

You might have to replace the magazine box as well.

Just a note. It is possible to modify stocks to fit the wrong bottom metal, but that requires extra work and cost. At the end of the day a 670 is a $250-$300 gun. Even if you upgrade the stock, it is still a $250-$300 gun.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like it might still be a viable option if I can find a second hand stock.

I may get back to you on the bottom metal if I can find a stock. How much are you looking for?

Need barrel for Win Model 670

My uncle gave me a Winchester Model 670 in 243 that is in good shape except for the barrel. I've worked on it quite a bit but it still looks bad. It's a post 64 push feed. Found a Model 70 barrel in 243 that has sights and free shipping for $90 that he says is in good condition that's a push feed. Seems like I've read that there was a change in the thread pattern but can't find anything on it. I'm thinking around $100 to have it re-barreled. So based on the limited description of the barrel and doubts about it's fitting, it's a $200 gamble. I've looked around at Shaw and multiple other barrels and the price goes way up to $400 +. It really is a nice rifle and I'd like to get it going but am reluctant to put in more than it's worth not to mention the risk of getting the wrong barrel. Ideas?

New member and from all of my Google searches, I think I'm gonna like it here.
