Winchester shotguns

Mines pretty low mileage, so it’s still okay. I will keep a better eye on it though

My personal 140 did it between 25 and 50 rounds. The semi autos are worse for it. I had two come to me in a week early this year. One pump one semi

but I love that 1300.

Until it eats the ejector they do work pretty well. The 1400/140 is a super soft shooting gun. Light and I have one with win-chokes that probably patterns the best of any shotgun I own. And I have several. Ejectors are plentiful and fairly easy to change. A few sellers even sell them in three packs for a discount. There are at least three styles. Ive also seen bolt bridges break off but thats usually when the person trying to replace the ejector tries to He-man the bolt out.

Model 12, Model 48. Model 21, Model 23, Model 24 and the 101 were all very nice shotguns and many are still in demand. Depending on the use, today there are plenty of other shotguns that as far as NEW models are concerned would be in more demand than a new Winchester.

Model 42, perhaps?

As for current Win. shotguns, the Sx3 &4 are their best offerings, and that's not necessarily high praise. They seem to have a share of the waterfowling guns. The 101's as noted are well- made guns, but have a well-deserved reputation for recoil effect above and beyond what it should be. The Sxp has a horrible trigger, and is basically a copy of a copy of their former not-that- great 1200/1300. The one good thing I can say about them is they open fast.

1930’s era Model 12 16 Ga in my safe as well.

Its been well used and has a few marks in the wood here and there from honest hunting, but the action is as smooth as sipping hundred dollar whiskey on a warm summers evening. ;)

Stay safe.

Sounds like a sweet shotgun.

I've got a 1300 that has run smoothly for 20 years. Hunting, 3 Gun, and trap. Birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. I wish I could find a slug barrel with a smooth bore for it. It seems like even Model 12 barrels cost as much as another gun.

Be careful there too. Some have a tab on the ejector that goes up into the barrel. Some don't. I've seen them ruined by the wrong barrel type.

ETA. The ejector ruined by the wrong barrel. Not the gun nor the barrel ruined. To clarify

Thanks. I haven't bought anything yet. That's something to look out for.

I have a used Ranger 1400 I picked up inexpensively some years back. It has been as reliable as one could wish for.

How can you tell which of the three model ejectors you mention a particular 1400 might need?

I received the Model 12 from my Grandfather, it wears the 28” solid rib/full choke barrel he used so often.

It originally had an additional 18” plain bead barrel/forearm set with matching serial numbers. For whatever reason, about 1982 or so my Grandfather sold it or gave it away. When I came out to the ranch and saw it was no longer in the gun cabinet, he told me he felt there was no use for it so he found a home where it could be used. :(

I’ve looked for a reasonably priced 16 ga barrel/forearm set to take the place of the original, but they’re either battered or (as you’ve seen) really expensive.

Stay safe.

Why?. I believe the SX3 is an outstanding shotgun. The SX4 though is nothing more than a SX3 with some cheaper parts IMO.

It's a good hunting gun, but it's not a Super X 1. Nor is it a VersaMax or V3. If I were to take up waterfowling again, I'd be looking at a V3 first.

Agreed. I believe the Super X1 is one of finest semi’s ever made, in the top two or three. My understanding(I could be wrong) is that much like the Model 21 the Super X1 cost so much to make it was just about impossible to make a profit selling them.

I have 12 semi-auto shotguns. A bit more than I need. I made a vow several years I would not purchase another shotgun unless I sold some of them. The problem is I want to keep them all and haven’t been able to pick which one(s) to get rid of. The next shotgun I buy will be a V3 though, I like the VersaMax but don’t have need to shoot 3.5” shells.

league night in wisc tonight. shot a super x one trap grade. sporting clays is a flat rib mod 12 with a dial duck, cowboy is a shortened 97, field gun is a field mod super x one. winchester, lol.

There's one (SX-1) for sale at the local LGS. Think they want 850 for it on consignment

Simply because you never had the pleasure of owning a Supermatic or 1400 im sure.......I kid I kid

All joking aside I never used an sx1. Don't know that I've saw one. I actually own several winchester and Smith and wesson pump and semi shotguns. All are pretty darn sorry but I like old shotguns. Even bad ones. Sadly several were police issued. Hopefully they never let an officer down when he/she needed them.

I see 200 dollar pump and semi shotguns nowdays on the internet sale emails and have to wonder if manufacturing is that much better now..... or are they junk. Someday I'll see one in person and I'll find out. Buds has some in their last email. Next trip to Gatlinburg I may find out.

I've got a 120 Ranger with 28inch vent rib and a well done cut down 18 inch barrel. I've probably put around 750 trouble free rounds through it. I love the corn cob style forend and I dont miss the 870 it replaced one bit.

My SX3’s work and work well. The model(Walnut Field) was discontinued around ten years ago. As a rule looks don’t mean much to me but in this case they do. Something about the gray metal looks awesome to my eyes.

If I shot skeet, trap or sporting clays I would probably jump on it.

You will when the ejector pops out. OTOH, replaceing the ejector on an 1200 is simple; replacing the ejector on an 870 is a major undertaking-but it is very rare to have to do it.

Honestly it’s because Winchester hasn’t actually made guns in 20 years. The older stuff was great. But the shotguns they did make for the last few years (ie: 1200,1300,1400) were hot garbage. Sure the guy who shoots his once every couple years will say his is a fine gun, but put them on a trap/skeet field and they crap out. Parts are plentiful but there’s a reason people call them Wincheapers.
Edit: Spelling.

Model 50's were a local favorite where I grew up.

Model 59's not so much so.

I liked the Model 120 better than the 870.
