Gentlemen, Given the rifles on the market now. If you were going to build a custom rifle, what action would you start with? Since Whitetail is the number one game animal in the States, what caliber?

.270, .30-06, or .308. I'd lean towards the .30s simply because of the vast availability of commercial ammunition and components for reloading. As an added benefit, the .30-06 and .308 would be sufficient for elk and moose, too. Well, the .270 would work, as well, but a .30 caliber would make me more comfortable.

I would avoid the magnum chamberings. I don't think they are necessary. Besides, I like to shoot for fun, but the magnums just wear-out my shoulder.

For actions... well, I'm partial to short actions and receiver mounted, three-position safety switches, so that really narrows the field. I like the Savage Accu-trigger, too. But, there is a nearly endless supply of Remington and Winchester parts and knowledgeable gunsmiths to work on them.

I would pick either a customized Savage (lots of bang for the buck, there) or one of the Winchester actions.

A truly cool project would be to take an old milsurp Mauser action and rework it to chamber something really neat like an "Ackley Improved" in .30 caliber. You'd have the advantage of being able to shoot the economical and popular hunting calibers plus your fireformed brass could then be loaded to higher velocities resulting in magnum performance when you want it. My vote would go to the .30-06 Ackley Improved. The ideal thing about the mauser action aside from price is that most if not all of the kinks relating to sporterizing it have been worked out. You can elect to simply purchase and assemble or go the whole way and forge your own bent bolt mill your own scope bases and checker your own stock. Another suggestion for something unique would be the finish. I've never seen a "french gray" in person however I've seen pictures of custom rifles with it. The french gray looks a little like a muted brushed nickel and when it's contrasted against a highly polished black blue the result is amazing. A brief look into Midway or Brownells websites should provide you with everything you'll likely need to do your project.

I'm really wanting to build a .257 Roberts on a Remington 700 action. I would say that the large ring Mauser action would be my second choice.
All I need is the $ to start buying components.:(

Either a Swedish or Spanish Mauser with a euro-mannlicher style full length dark walnut stock, hand checkered and oil rubbed. High polish bluing, mirror finish bolt. That's just me, but I believe the 6.55x55 or 7x57 to be premeir deer cartridges. If you're gonna build a custom, make it different from what's available commercially. ;)

Lord boys, all of them sounded nice. You are suppose to say "DO THIS!" and make my choice simple. We have our deer season coming up and now I have plenty to think about while sitting on a stand.

remington model 700 action, or a winchester model 70 action, and definetly in .270 which is my favorite hunting rd. it is a flat shooter and is easily controlable, and easy to shoot from begineers to veterans, of the deer hunts.

Remington 700 short action. First choice: .308 Win. Second choice: 7mm-08.

Oh ... do this. :D

Our next door neighbor is a silhouette shooter and pretty good at it. He uses a Remington 700 action and shoots 7-08 and tells me that combination is pretty popular with the silhouette crowd.

I am going to chime in for a semi-forgotten wildcat...even though I don't have one, I think there will be one in my future....

Mauser and a simple re-chamber in 8mm-06.

The cartridge looks to be a very fine one...and no slouch as far as a game-gitter. :)

Why not Savage?

Anybody can rebarrel a savage. Their new Accutrigger gets high marks. For the price you could buy a new one for the action, sell off the barrel and stock on E-Bay and end up with a quality rifle that will shoot just as well or better than higher priced actions.
