Ok I will try to make this long story short.
A friend and neighbor of my daughter was killed on New Year's eve in Seattle. The poor girl was stabbed 7 times in a supposed robbery (seems like a lot of times to be stabbed for a heist). It happended right out in front of my daughter's and this girls building.
I went to see her and her husband yesterday and there was an officer there asking more questions. I suggested that she get a carry permit so she can defend herself and the detective said that she would be better off with a personal safety device that makes a loud noise. He said that the bad guy could disarm her and kill her with the weapon. I made the remark that what is the difference if she gets killed with a knife or a gun...she would be dead. With the gun she might have a chance to defend herself as she is 4"11 and 95 pounds.
He said that was a wise ass remark. I shut up but wonder what others think?

Nothing "wise ass" about it!!

I have a 10 month old daughter. I'm taking her to the range as soon as I think she's ready. I'm going to encourage her to get her CCW permit when she turns 18.

You were rational. Apparently, the detective didn't appreciate a rational response.

Why shut up?

Why would you shut up? It seems like we are defering to people that are anti because we do not want to appear over the top.
I don't get in peoples faces but I always voice my opinion.
Just because he was a cop doesn't mean he was right.
If a person can wield a weapon, they should in their own defense.
To heck with the cop that doesn't feel that way. People have to live their own lives and stop worrying about what others think.

Noisemakers are a good idea. My wife's carries 15 noises in the magazine and one in the chamber.

Yes, we really do, at times, refer to our XDs as "noisemakers."

Ya, I supposed the screams of the little girl being stabbed to death were good noisemakers too...:fire:

I prefer the more quiet method of a gun...

Perhaps he should just carry a big noisemaker instead of his duty pistol...STOP or I'll say STOP again! (British Bobby's after a criminal)

Yeah I remember that story being in the news . Most people ignore alarms in the Seattle area anyway , I don't think it would be vedry effective unless she shoves it in her attackers ear .

seems like a lot of times to be stabbed for a heist

Since when does the number of times stabbed or shot determine what type of crimes were being committed. If she was a fighter, she could easily be stabbed several times.

I went to see her and her husband yesterday and there was an officer there asking more questions. I suggested that she get a carry permit so she can defend herself and the detective said that she would be better off with a personal safety device that makes a loud noise.

Gotta go with the detective here. Carry permits are not good personal protection items and they don't make much noise. She would be much better off if she had a gun to go with it, and then plenty of training. In fact, being as she is 4-11 and 95 lbs, she should be involved in personal defense training simply because she is at a disadvantage for height, weight, and strength. She probably has been all her life, yes?

So you and she just now realizing that personal safety involving personal defense might be a good thing because there was a murder of another female? It may be a hard pill to swallow, but y'all are a bit late in this epiphany. However, don't make the mistake of just getting a gun and a permit. The detective might have been a jerk, but his point has some merit. Don't just stop with the gun and permit. Get her some training if you are truly concerned about her well being. Get her involved in martial arts as well. She isn't going to have a gun on her 24/7.

I didn't get into an argument with the cop because its a very emotional time for my daughter and her husband. I am not shy about voicing my opinion but I try to use some discretion at times. This was one of those times.
Beside they wanted the cop out of their home asap.

The girl killed screamed loud, several times and was heard by many. They called 911! by the time they arrived she was dead...six minutes.

Also she has had defense training. I don't know how she would have done with this guys as he was described as 40 yo and 6'1. But thats not the point of my post.

Standard know it all cop who clearly doesn't know much. He's just plain wrong, that's standard "anti-ammo" about your weapon being used on yourself, there are no statistics that will back that up. You should have asked him why he carries a gun if they're so dangerous.

Wise ass remark ? I would have told Mr. smartypants detective, " I would rather be a live wise ass, then a dead victim, following your advice". Don't worry, he would not have arrested you, last time I checked, we still had free speech, and a right to carry.

If the bad guy can kill her even with a gun in her hands, what do you suppose is going to happen if she is empty handed? A game of paper, rock, scissors perhaps?

I don't know where people get the notion that just because a person is of the female gender, she is completely incompetent and unable fight back. Is it not possible to train a woman in the skills and mind set nessesary for self defense? Sure, women usually have less strength than men, but thats the beauty of firearms.... they equalize.

Getting a CCW and weapon for ladies I strongly recommend. That said she needs a serious class in the use of her new weapon. Thunder Ranch rings a bell for this sort of thing. Another bit of food for thought, practice, practice, practice. 10 rounds of .22 to the face will surely give someone a bad day, let alone a more serious caliber.

Doublenaughtspy that is a lot of times to be stabbed for a robbery, I'm no expert but I do read a lot and watch a lot of crime documentaries, stabbing someone 7 times is almost always a crime of passion. As for the cop I would have a problem with his comment too.

I remember a THR where such a thread title would have been considered poor form.

I suppose the officer just wants you and others to drink latte coffees and depend upon them for substandard police protection -- which SCOTUS has said isn't their direct responsibility, anyway.

Someone once said propheticly: "When seconds count, the cops are only minutes away"

Ultimately we are each responsible for our personal protection. The detective was a wise ass I say.

I commend you for keeping a reign on your tongue in the face of that cop's ignorance and hubris. I don't usually have a short fuse, but being in that situation, I would've had little tolerance for his antics.

Officer: She would be better off with a personal safety device that makes a loud noise.
Me: So you'll know when to show up and do the paperwork?

In any case, he could've picked a much better occasion to push his distorted views.

Train her and let her shoot alot to find a favorite caliber and let her get good with it. Shotgun, handgun, assault rifle any will do as long as she likes it and handles it well. Train her husband too and they will be set. The two of them could drop an attacker in a heartbeat then. The detective obviously had no idea what he was talking about. Hmmm...loud noise ehh. I would ask him why he carries a firearm and not a "Super Match" or "Gold Cup Trophy" kazoo.

Show Me The Statistics

He said that the bad guy could disarm her and kill her with the weapon.
I'm surprised to learn of a cop in a shall-issue jurisdiction spouting this crap. That's what I'd expect from a young officer on LAPD. For over ten years I have been following (and sharing) firearm-related news available on the internet and can only recall three instances where an armed private citizen was disarmed by an assailant. In fact, in one of the incidents, a man carrying openly in Phoenix was killed by two men who were trying to rob him of his gun and it was not clear from the news report if they actually got it away from him. In another Arizona incident, the citizen was disarmed after he tried to come to the aid of another driver being carjacked. When the carjacker's associates saw the Samaritan leave his vehicle, gun in hand, they ran him over and pinned his forearm to the pavement with a tire. When the carjacker saw the citizen's handgun on the pavement, he picked it up before departing the scene. The one incident that involved what one would normally think of as a disarm occurred in an elevator in New York City and the man who was disarmed wqas quite a bit older than his adult assailant.

I would recommend the same type of noise maker the officer carries in his holster. It also doubles as a self defense weapon.

Being an LEO, if the cop had made that statement to me, I would yhave reported him to his own department's internal affairs division for himself being a wise ass and for giving out bad information.

Next time you see the defective Detective ask him if he ever heard of Kitty Genovese. She was murdered in the entrance to her appartment building in New York City. There were at least 21 people who heard her screams for help. No one even called the police. They didn't want to get involved. A loud noise didn't do her any good then, why should it do you daughter any good now? The only thing BG's respect is the ability to do serious damage to BG's "career".
