Wise arse remark?

I'm over here on the east side of WA State - heard about the stabbing
and sorry for the loss.

I'll go back and read the thread now.

I shut up but wonder what others think?
You did fine, no need to argue your point with the detective. He is not the one you need to convince. You would likely never convince him anyway. Your daughter wanted the officer out of her home ASAP, no need to press the issue.

When your daughter and her husband are receptive, talk to them both seriously, and in private about getting a CCW permit and carrying a firearm.

The goal is to help your loved ones understand the need for effective protection and to help them obtain it, not to win an argument with a cop.

"I remember a THR where such a thread title would have been considered poor form."

Mod thanks for changing the title of this thread, I didn't intend to offend any one's sensibilities.

Why would you shut up? It seems like we are defering to people that are anti because we do not want to appear over the top.

C'mon... I don't agree that it was a bad thing to say, but why keep yapping away to the detective? Frankly, piping up to a detective that is clearly trying to get you to be quiet is just a bad idea. I think you did exactly the right thing by cutting it off there: You made your point, he got it, end of discussion. Pressing further would have just made things worse for all concerned.

I don't think cops are gods, and I certainly think that you can freely express opinions that they find contrary, but there is a time and a place for everything. If you really want to press the issue with him, do as Vern suggests and file a complaint, because he really doesn't have the authority to tell you what is wise ass or what isn't.

While in a normal situation I would agree with commenting back to the officer, this situation seems a bit different given the setting. Let the officer say whatever he will. There is a time and a place for everything and that does not sound like it was the time or the place to be getting into an argument.

I once heard a sage saying. "I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy and I can't carry enough rocks..."
The French call it l'esprit de l'escalier (the spirit of the staircase) -- thinking of a snappy comeback you could have used earlier in the evening while you're climbing the stairs to your apartment.

But next time you could say, "I'd have her carry a cop, but you guys are such lard*sses no one can lift you."

I'm sorry to hear that.
If one lives in a shall-issue jurisdiction, it would be very silly indeed to not at least apply. You might not even carry every day - but there will be times when you really want to and it's nice to have the option.

Hindsite is 20/20 -but you should have asked him what type/caliber noise maker he carried.

"Ya know, Officer....I appreciate the job you guys do and I have nothing but respect for Police Officers but, I have a major problem with what you just said.

As her FATHER, it is my job to inform MY daughter when she is receiving bad advice. Again, not to be disrespectful but....that's just bad advice that I do not agree with it.

Aside from our jobs, there is no difference between you and I. Police Officers are not supermen and women, they are human. The training you received and the skills that resulted from that training, that allow you to carry a firearm responsibly, are available to civilians too. It is my belief that, not only my daughter, but every responsible citizen should make every effort to obtain firearms training and carry a firearm where and when ever the law allows."

Police Officer or not....he WOULD have received an earful.

You should listen to the good detective, he is the expert, and buy your daughter a nice pistol without a silencer.

There was a case a few years ago where a little girl was kidnapped and murdered on the way home. She had a noise make device. It was later found under ground. She triggered during the attack. No one came to her aid. Later, the neighbors buried it underground to shut it up.

So there.

Wise... yes. He was the one being the arse.

I'm with those that stated no need to argue with him. Just have a good sit
down with her and offer any assistance you can in guiding her down the path
of self-reliance if she is willing.

Isn't a .357 magnum a "personal safety device that makes a loud noise"?

Just checking...

matching wits with people, like the cop mentioned, hardly ever work out in anyone's favor.

A stupid comment speaks for itself no need to respond to it.

Gotta love the cops reasoning. An unarmed woman was just murdered but you shouldn't carry a gun because you might get killed.

Because apparently unarmed they don't kill you the weapon they brought?

Did you ask the cop why he was carrying his duty weapon and not just a noise maker, since now any bad guy could easily take his gun and kill him with it?

I'm already teaching 9 year-old daughter how to shoot handguns. She's starting with a Walther P22, because it is small, light and has a small grip. By the time she is old enough to own a handgun in her own right, she'll be a crack shot and I plan to buy her the handgun of her choice for her 21st birthday.

It is (fortunately) not universal, but a lot of cops are the type who believe they should control everyone and everything. Some people who join the force are already bullies and controllers, others become that way to emulate those who are. Either way, to those people, expressing any opinion that differs from theirs is wrong, and they would beat you up or put you in jail if they thought they could get away with it. That is also the type of cop who beats his wife and children and gets away with it because he is a cop.

That kind of officer is, of course, the type who does not believe anyone but the police should be armed.

what advice! my mom told me once when i was a kid that people are almost always killed with their own guns. bull****. handled yourself well though, i hope your daughter and her husband are receptive to practicing and owning.

If the bad guy can take your gun before you use it on him and kill you, it seems to me that he could also take your noisemaker before you use it to alert someone and then stab you with the same knife he used to kill the other victim.
