Woman shoots at tailgater

That's just not right.

People who are seriously tailing me thinking they can pressure me into speeding up tick me off too, but - shooting at them?! No way! Not cool. Not justified use of force in any way shape or form.

Unbelievable, and so close to home too.

Had to laugh a bit at the mention of Sheriff Mark Hackel though. He loves the camera about as much as the infamous John Bunnell of COPS fame and probably shows his face in the local news once a week.

Totally ridiculous. I just gradually slow down until the tailgater is a safe distance away or finally backs off. They usually get the message.

Rush hour.
Tailgaters.
That is probably the only combination that consistently provokes me to scrupulously adhere to the speed limit.

You have to wonder, don't you, if the guy in the pick-uptruck was actually tailgating her - or if she was just so wacko that she thought he was and then shot. She sounds like a pretty crazy woman to me, as in went off the deep end.

I'm not sure what's dumber.... the lady shooting at him, or him deciding to continue following a lady who is shooting at him.

:scrutiny:

Wouldn't that be Double tapping? the Brakes that is.....:neener:
Seriously though it's a black eye for gun owners, and just one bad incident gets more media than 1000 good ones or so it seems.

My theory has always been -If they don't like fifty they won't like forty at all.
Never thought of shooting them though

Officials believe the bullet missed the pickup, and no one was hurt.
Wouldn't that be pretty easy to verify.
More stellar fact filled reporting

Its idiots like this that hurt gun ownership rights for every responsible person out there. Why oh why must there be so many stupid people out there, there shouldn't be laws against gun ownership there should be laws against being stupid!:banghead:

Hammer her! We who posess CCW do it to protect ourselves and loved ones. Period.....

She should go away for a long time.

I've carried for over 5 years and have never even had the urge to "display" a firearm, much less shoot it, over a traffic annoyance! If they didn't hit your vehicle with enough force to kill you, or endanger your family, what's the harm?

Your pride?

We are held to a higher standard. She didn't maintain, she lost.

DONE.

Irony

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A woman who told authorities she was fed up with tailgaters pulled out a gun and shot at the tires of a pickup that got too close, police said. Officials believe the bullet missed the pickup, and no one was hurt.

Bernadette Headd, 39, was in rush-hour traffic Wednesday in suburban Detroit when the pickup pulled behind her, police said.

Headd changed lanes and fired one round from a 9 mm handgun, police said. The driver followed her and flagged down a deputy, who stopped her and found the weapon.

"She said she was tired of people tailgating her," Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said.

Headd, who had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm from a vehicle and use of a firearm during a felony.

She was ordered held on $50,000 bond.

Guess this disproves the theory that all CCW holders are always the good guys and are incapable of losing their tempers or otherwise misusing their firearms.

There are a lot of members here who have argued just this very point whenever a thread on laws requiring CCW holders to disclose they are carrying and allow themselves to be disarmed by the police come up.

Guess it proves my point that cops, CCW holders, judges, priests, bus drivers.....everyone is human and you can't make blanket judgements about any class of people.

Obviously she has never driven in NJ. More than 5 feet between cars is two much. My solution to tailgaters is usually the well-aimed bottle out the window. (This was after being followed for 30+ miles by some arse at speeds over 95 mph) I wasn’t sure of his intentions but I wasn’t going to let him follow me to my destination. Period.

Assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm from a vehicle and use of a firearm during a felony.

Here's hoping they throw the book (and possibly the bookshelf) at her.

That said, this is one crime by a single Michigan CCW holder... its a black eye for all Michigan gun owners, but I'm still content with the fact that permit holders are many, many orders of magintude less likely to commit crimes.

Of course, given the stellar fact finding ("Officials believe the bullet missed the pickup, and no one was hurt." :uhoh: ) are we certain she actuall had a permit?

A friend sat on the jury in a similar case here in Seminole county.
The Defense tried to stack the deck with CCW holder.
The prosecution knew something about gun owners that the defense lawyer did not know and allowed it.

The guilty verdict took about five minutes, but they were afraid that they would get in trouble if they didn't take longer so they just sat around talking about their guns for half an hour

Ugh. More ammo for the Brady Bunch.

Tailgaters don't usually stay on my six for long. A quick flash of the brake lightson a 1 ton truck with an heavy duty steel bumper usually helps them tio decide that passing or backing off is good idea.

Very true, though I believe it still holds true that CCW holders are, as a group, as responsible as you can get considering the fact that everyone is human. Damn those bad apples!

A 3/4-ton Dodge with 4" of lift generally tends to discourage tailgating. As for both the tailgater and especially the "shooter," . . .

"You just can't fix stupid."

I will truly never understand what produces the tendency in people to "road rage." Maybe it's all those years of being on a bike, and therefore lowest on the food chain, that has resulted in my level of patience for idiots.

My theory has always been -If they don't like fifty they won't like forty at all.

Per Defensive Driving Training, if you are being tailgated your best bet is to slowly decrease speed. This will accomplish a couple of things:

1) Either they will pass you and get off your tail, or
2) You will increase following distance so that if you have to stop suddenly you decrease the chance of a collision, but even if he does hit you it will be at a slower speed.
