Howdy all!

I've got a decent Winchester Trapper (not sure of model number, but it looks exactly like a Model 94 30-30) with a cracked stock. The gun is going to be used for SASS, and that crack on the stock bothers me. It's with the grain, across the smallest part of the "grip".

Is a good Elmer's Glue fix strong enough to withstand the brunt of repeated .44 Mag firing? Or should I replace the stock?

...and do I have to have another Trapper stock, or do all the Winchester lever actions use the same furniture? They look similar to me, but I'm not sure.

Anyone know? Thanks in advance!

You want to use epoxy to repair the crack. Thoroughly degrease the wood with acetone (or similar), and allow it to dry thoroughly (like overnight). Gently spread the crack apart and blow the epoxy in with low-pressure compressed air (keyboard duster, or similar). Now clamp it together and let it dry thoroughly (overnight) before you mess with it.

FWIW, my understanding is that the Winchester Trappers are not a suitable choice for CAS because they only hold nine rounds. Is that correct?

Thanks for your reply!

On a 9 or 10 shot stage, I'm slow as hell...but I'm pretty slow anyway. I'm not so much competitive, as I'm there for having fun and socialization; they're pretty good folks. Maybe someday I'll move up to a loner rifle, but I don't like the idea of buying a weapon "just" for competition. I figured if I was going to drop that kind of money for firearms, they'd better be pretty darned useful...and I like that I can get (or used to be able to get) .44 Mag pretty much everywhere.

Unfortunately, the rifle was repaired before I bought it, so I have no idea how the stock was reattached. It was advertised as broken/repaired, so the seller did not try to hide anything from me...but you know? Those .44 Mag rifles kick a whole lot more than I thought they would! Now I have visions of the stock breaking along the repair, and sending sharp sections of old walnut into my shoulder...(shudder). If I can replace the stock, that's what I'd like to do. I just don't know if the Winchester lever stocks are all the same, or if they're slightly different.

Anyone know?

Indian trick to repair rifle stocks. Thin strip of leather soaked wet and tightly wrapped around damaged area. As it dries, it gets tighter and will hold the wood together nicely. Some SASS shooters put leather on their guns just for the Old West look.
