Where ever the good LORD puts me.
Looking for some wood or laminate stocks for my 642. I have a set of Pachmayer compac's on it right now and I really like them as far as size and shape, but would like to get some wood stocks that are about the same size.
Now I don't mind finger grooves, but if they don't have finger grooves I'd like checkering and lastly they have to be able to take speed loaders.
So what do you revolver guys think would be a good set to look at getting?
I'd like to keep it under $70, but $90 would be the max.
Thanks in advance.
Here's the Pachmayer's that are on it.

The ones available directly from S&W are produced by Altamont. They are Dymondwood. Very hard, but nicely shaped boot grips. Very good for pocket drawing. I have a pair of silver/blacks with the croc checkering on a S&W 442.

But Dymondwood is Dymondwood - a resin based product that produces a synthetic wood laminate (there is some wood in there as a foundation).

If I was in the market for something and wanted nice grips with a real wood product, I would look at what Esmeralda is offering (http://www.esmeralda.cc/) as well as Craig Spegel (http://www.craigspegel.com/).

Badger custom has some very nice grips. They have full size and boot grips and as you can see I like Rosewood.

Kim Ahrends, Craig Spegel, Badger, Eagle, and Hogue all have some great designs out there (along with some really great looking wood), that will help a lot with getting a proper grip on S&W J frame.

Thanks for all the replies. I just saw the list of stock makers/sellers over in accessories.
The photos do help though, some photos like on Hogue's website don't give you a real good view over them sometimes.

With the exception of the factory stocked Model 19, all of these are stocked with Eagle's Secret Service grips in rosewood.

These are oil finished wood, not laminate nor plastic impregnated stuff.

I went Old school with standard round butt wood grips on my 438 off of a model 36. My speed loader works fine with them. I'm basically a circus midget with small hands, so the old style worked out for me with holding it too.

I have the Secret Service grips in ebony on my 642 and like them a lot.

All I can say is I do NOT recommend ordering any grips from S&W at this time.

I too was in the market for a pair of dymondwood J-frame grips and thought it'd be a great idea to order them straight from the company.

LONG story short, it appears S&W is having significant issues with manning in there online store department and things have simply been a nightmare in getting these grips.

Just DO NOT order your grips from Smith's online store.

Trust me, been there. :fire:

Is this a recent problem because I have ordered directly from S&W many times over the years without a hitch. Last time was about 6 months ago and no problems then...

Yes they will fit fine. I've got another set of those stocks on a S&W 642 and I have a Tyler T-grip on that gun. Perfect fit. I'll try to take a picture tomorrow of the 642 with a Tyler-T on it.

J frame grips....

If you want deep concealment wood that would help re-sale value(with true gun/shooting industry types, not a half-wit pawn shop employee), Id check out OR's top rated www.CraigSpegel.com . His "Boot Grips" are used by many working cops & armed professionals. ;)
I like the "safe queen" styles from www.EagleGrips.com too. They are a tad flashy but could meet your needs for a J frame revolver.

There's 0 wrong with the Bantam grips of Hogue. Hogue has been a US gun industry leader for many years. The wood, rubber & nylon products are great.

C&L would a Tyler T-grip fit with those stocks?
They do look nice.

Thanks everyone who has replied. I think I'll probably get either the Badgers, Secret service or the Herrett's.

Apparently yes. Do yourself a favor and just try to get ahold of an operator anytime past 4 o'clock. S&W is not doing the customer good lately in the ol' customer service department. At least that's been my experience in the last two months, and the story is so convoluted that I don't care to elaborate.

Do as you will but I refuse to buy anything from S&W's online store till they can get some things straightened out.

Can anyone tell me if the Badger boot grip permits all three fingers on the grip?

I'm looking for something to put on my 642 that can allow the pinky finger.

The Badger round grip posted by ArchAngel looks like you can get the pinky finger on board, but is it too bulky for pocket carry?

I can get my pinky finger on, but my fingers are cramped and not perfectly in the finger grooves.
