Can't afford the tolls to get out of Chicago
I need some nice burled walnut for a set of 1911 grips I have to build. I looked on the internet and it didn't seem that anyone really had what I want/need. Anyone know where I can get some highly figured walnut? Or do you know of another dark wood that is highly figured that I could use in lieu of walnut and can actually find?

You can haunt your local saw mill for what they might be cutting off as defects such as a knot hole.
Check out knife making suppliers, They usually have a good supply of exotics.

Do a computer search for 'stabilized wood'. You'll find nice woods of all types ,usually fancy grain and the stabilization impregnates the wood with acrylic so it won't warp or crack and needs no finish.

I've sold wood for grips in the past. I have lots of very nice maple, but it sounds like you want a darker wood. I do have some very nice leopardwood (sometimes called snakewood) I could sell you a piece of for grips, would have to look to see if I have any amboyna.

Let me know if you think you'd be interested--shoot me a pm or something
