wooden rifle stock extension.

So i have this wooden stock that looks kind of like it's too short for the rifle that is in it. And I was wondering; how would one go about extending the forearm a couple inches without a whole wood working shop? Now i realize that the wood grain and color probably aren't going to match up since I would definitely be using a different type of wood for the extension piece.
All I really require is that the extension is sturdy and I can sand it to the point where the joint wouldn't be detectable under a coat or two of paint. Also, how would I go about in-letting the barrel channel? Any light you guys and girls could shed on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

granted your lines might be a bit off without a bit of wood shaping....but it should be do-able.

A good gunsmith could do it and make it look good. Wouldn't be cheap though. A recoil pad could be installed and add about 1" if that would be enough.

yeah, the wood shaping part is the part that I'm not sure I can do. maybe I'll get froggy one day and try it. Thanks for responding to my post so fast guys!

one thing i recommend doing....

buy a few really cheap used rifle stocks......and practice wood work on them before you touch your rifles.

theyre great for practicing refinishing, and major woodwork with....and if you screw them up trying something.......you can gain practice making them look good again

It's a mosin nagant 91/30 with the stock cut off behind the rear barrel band. if you look on google images you can find pictures of them. I was reluctant to say what kind of rifle it was since I don't want this thread turning into a purist debate on whether its ok to sporterize surplus weapons. I've heard both sides of that debate and I agree with both to a certain extent. However, I needed a general purpose bolt gun to hunt and plink with and I cant afford a 700 or a ruger scout or anything pretty so I took my common run of the mill mosin and made it to be what I wanted. once I get it back from the smith I may post a picture of it for you guys.

Ok, guys i know this thread has been idle for a few days but i got my rifle back from the smith today, so here it is.



The only way this rifle does not meet Jeff Cooper's requirements for a scout rifle is in weight. The wooden stock and the heavy bolt causes it to weigh about a pound too much.
