I know several guys who could put you in the hospital and in physical therapy for a long time with nothing but a stout hickory cane even if you are carrying a handgun - if your attacker makes the mistake of getting close enough to you. It is a serious weapon in trained hands. Most Instructors will stress heavily that you learn the fine line between injuring someone with your cane - or killing them. And it is a fine line. Usually one good strike will take most of the fight out of them and allow you to walk away.

Yep, joints or bony projections, one good wack can put someone down and out of the fight. Head, neck, spine and a couple of places on the torso can put them in the ground.

The best areas to target IMO are hands (little tiny bones) wrists, forearms and elbows. A blow to the side of the knee is good also. That will take the fight out of most guys and make it extremely painful for them to continue their attack. And most will run or crawl away. The best thing about a cane is you do not need to reach for and draw it - it's already in your hand.
