My understanding is that a clip holds rounds in position by enclosing only the rear portion of the round(s). A magazine encloses the entire round.
Although I often hear both used incorrectly.
Better way to put it is that both a clip and a magazine hold cartridges, while only a magazine contains a mechanism for feeding the cartridges, ie a spring and follower.
