Magazine….Clip?????

I think its a hold over from the military as every US rifle since 1903 has used stripper clips to load the magazine.

I logged in tonight because I was bored...I see others did too. :)

I was going to complain about people calling gunstocks and grips furniture because furniture is what you have sitting around in your living room...Then I looked around my living room and realized..."Hmmm, I guess they're right".

The better question is. Who cares? Don't we have more important things to worry about. It's all semantics. We can all name a dozen different words that 50 years ago had a totally different meaning.

Before I ever went to a gun shop it was called clip, I had heard magazine before, but it was always clip, not until I started on the forums did I hear anyone ever CARE that there is a difference.

Then comes the internet, huge arguments about stupid topics. Before the internet do you think that MOA was such a HUGE deal. Or what is better, HMR or 22WMR?

I had one guy chew me out because I said "gun" and not "rifle". He lost a sale.

If we were all to REALLY speak properly, it would be in the Queens English. American is a progressive language. It has changed in the last 10 years, 50 years and 400 years, and yes, I know dates. English is a relatively easy language to learn, American is not because it contains so much slang and words and pieces of words from so many different languages.

There is so much useless infighting about stupid topics in the firearms community that no wonder stupid gun (firearm) laws get passed. If as much time was spent on real issues than tripe (slang), I would be able to use my silencer (moderator, suppressor) in Washington, I can own one but not use it.

Oh, I use Firefox AND dictionary.com

OK fellas, I think I've said this before, about a dozen times, but if you can find an old 60s catalog from Sears or Wards, someplace that was big in sporting goods at one time, and look at the rifles, you'll see that they generally called a metal box type magazine a "clip magazine." I can still remember that like yesterday and probably a lot of other older guys can. Clip magazine, tube magazine, etc. A few would call them "box magazines," but most used clip. Sometimes "magazine" wouldn't even make it into the description. For example, my Stevens model 34 has a banana shaped box magazine which, in the description, was called a 5 shot clip.

Like it or not, it was there. Don't be surprised if it crops up now and again. And if that, or calling a rifle a gun really bothers you...........

A magazine is an ammunition reservoir and a feeding device. It can be fixed within the body of the firearm, or detachable. A clip holds cartridges together for insertion into a magazine. Makes sense, right? Then along comes Marlin with "clip-fed" (those that do not have a tubular magazine) .22 rifles. And Col. Charles Askins used to write things like "But there's them as likes lots of ca'tridges in the clip." ;)

I think the whole calling of magazines clips started with the gaming culture. Game developers weren't too gun savvy and, when making first person shooter games, misrepresented them. Don't quote me on that though.
I'm old enough to pre-date (by a considerable margin) the advent of video games. People were calling removable magazines "clips" a looooooong time before video games. The gamers just picked up the mis-use because they didn't know any better. I have no idea when/where the misnomer first appeared.

Oops. I quoted you. What now? Do you have to kill me?

Curiously, I just bought a new Marlin .22 rifle, and I ordered it with two extra magazines. The mags came on blister pack cards, which are marked "Clip Magazine." Even Marlin has been assimilated.

I try to use proper nomenclature when describing things: A rifle is NOT a pistol. But, when trying to differentiate between a long gun and hand gun, calling a revolver a pistol is acceptable. But, we all know the automatic is a pistol and the revolver a revolver.

I don't correct people on clip/magazine unless it matters to which they are referring. "Hand me that clip"....when there are mags AND clips laying about makes a difference. When only mags are there...I'll throw one to the fellow. Simple!

same as "cement" when it's really "concrete" !! Irks me.

from doubletapdrew :
The simplest distinction I've seen (learned at THR) is:
magazine: spring
clip: no spring

I've not heard this simplistic saying before but it's easily remembered and easily explained to the un-informed.

Actually, I think a lot of WWII folks call the things "clips."

And Vietnam and later folks call the things "magazines."

And I call them "magajeans" because I had this Korean drill sergeant, and that's how he pronounced it... "Rock and road your magajean!"

To equate them is akin to calling a "hammer" a "nailgun". They are both used to drive nails into stuff, right? TOTALLY DIFFERENT ANIMAL.
Like "AR-15" and "Assault Weapon" or "car" and "truck".
My gripe with it has always been that WE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE, and therefore have no excuse. I have been one of the Nazis about it before, because I believe it is a harmful practice, showing our opponents just what a bunch of "ignorant gun-nut hicks" we are. I personally hate it.
We are for the most part educated, intelligent, professional and safe individuals who promote shooting and firearms for all their intended purposes. We strongly oppose laws designed to disarm us, as we should. We can't also come across as a bunch of simpletons who don't know what to call that darn thing you put the boolits into.
Best,
Steve

I'll add my support to the "who cares?" camp. Personally, I have not once not known what the person was talking about when they called a magaine a clip, since in the conversation, they have always mentioned what gun they were discussing, so by that, I know if it's one that uses a clip vs. a magazine, so it's no big deal.Even if I didnt, for some reason, know which they were actually referring to, I dont see how that hurts me at all, so...

Personally, I call a clip a clip, and a magazine a magazine, but only because it wasnt until I got into milsurps about 8 years ago, that I even found out there was such a thing as stripper and Enbloc clips, so....

A while back, my sister and I were going to the local Wal-Mart. We were gonna hop into the car, when she said "sorry, I have to move these magazines off the front seat". I was about jump up and down and ask her what kind of gun she bought when I realized what she was talking about.

That's when you know you're a gun nut...

when i hear someone refer to magazines as a clip i automatically assume they're a noob or 14 years old....

I do as well. When I hear someone say clip, it sounds like they have been paying too much attention to rap lyrics or video games, and not enough attention to actual firearms facts and lessons. Learning proper terms is just another step to moving out of the noob category. People who say clip tend to be the same people who believe a shotgun will knock you off your feet or Glocks are invisible to x-ray machines. Once they learn more about firearms, they'll change.

When I see someone forgo the use of proper capitalization and punctuation, I automatically assume they're a n00b or a 14-year-old...
:D
Just razzin' ya'.
