Would you buy an AK variant in .223?

Some of the best grouping AK's are VEPR's in .223.
That said my SAR-3(.223) is close to my RPK,but the RPK
takes her most of the time. I think it comes down to ammo.
If the price is right,go get it.

I did. I didn't have an AK that was chambered in .223 and I wanted one. It shoots great with the TAPCO trigger group installed.

I would just so i can have the simplicity of using one type of ammo in my AR, AK, and any other rifle that i wanted a cheap .22cal cartridge in. My first AK will have to be in 7.62 though, as i am making a project rifle out of it.

Whatever blows your hair back, but ask yourself: "Why go to a French restaurant for Italian food?" (or whatever other metaphor you want to use)

:scrutiny:

I agree with gvnwst.. but I also agree with buck00.

Ive got an AR, and Ive got SKS's.. so one ammo type allready isnt an issue for me.
that considerd, Id rather have an AK with the extra punch of the 7.62x39.. cause Ive allready got a 'CQ' in .223, my AR.

ip.

Yes! I have two AK's in standard 7.62x39 and one in .223 at the moment. I actually had two AK's in .223 not too long ago but I ended up selling one to buy a Sig 556.

Here is my Norinco 84s in .223

I wouldn't, but as someone earlier said I have done the ar in 7.62. I haven't figured out the problem with that one entirely but the firing pin is smaller on the ar and often doesn't set off the primer. It's quite frustrating. I can take them out of the ar and shoot them in any of my ak's and they fire EVERY time.

You need to modify your firing pin so that the protrusion is increased by .007

It a very simple procedure, simply chuck the FP in a drill press and use a file to remove material from the shoulder where it contacts the rear of the bolt.

If you still have FTF after the firing pin mod an extra power hammer spring usually cures the situation

I think the 7.62x39 is a better cartridge overall for the AK, but that's just my opinion obviously. Plus, its cheaper. That said, I still own an AR in 5.56 and love the cartridge's flat trajectory.

I seen an AK variant at my local gun store not too long ago and it is a .223. it is not a bad price, but I am wondering how many of you would buy such a thing.

I don't have a problem with the concept of the 5.56mm AK. Bulgarian AR-M1s seem to run very well in my experience with them. Accuracy isn't much different than an iron sighted 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 AK as far as I've shot them (225-250 meters).

That said, whether or not I'd buy the specific model you saw in store is more of a question -- which type of mags does it take and how available are they? Is it from a reputable builder, or from a good builder that had a run of problems with some of their 5.56mm guns (i.e. Arsenal), etc.

I personally like the 5.56 AKs; And so do quite a few NATO countries if I'm not mistaken.

if it is a wasr 3 DO NOT BUY IT!!!!!!! i had a wasr 3 and unloaded the first 20 rounds of the mag one bolt pull at a time, the last 10 only one trigger pull unloaded the gun. but any other variant is okay, again: if it is a wasr 3 DO NOT BUY IT!!!!!.

I had three AKs until last year, a 5.45 by Arsenal, a pair of Saigas in 5.56 and 7.62X51 both fully converted with flash hiders, etc. I decided I didn't need three and sold the one that was, of the three the least pleasant to shoot, the Arsenal. My 5.56 and 7.62X51 AKs are a constant source of pleasure and surprise the AR shooters with their accuracy, especially when one of the high power winners try them out. The Saiga seems to appreciate those individuals who shoot better than I do.

IF it takes standard STANAG mags without trouble, then YES. I would buy it.

If it was between a 5.56 and a 7.62x39 I would get the later. That said there is no reason not to have both IMO.

Get one in 5.45 x 39 and a boatload of ammo if you desire.

I concur. There's nothing wrong with the 5.56 AK in theory, the only problem is that there was never a standardization of magazines like there was for the 7.62 and 5.45 variants. So you have Chinese .223 mags, Yugo .223, Galil .223 and Romanian .223 and none of the mags interchange.

The .223 rounds don't have enough inertia to bow the barrel on an AK as much as the 7.62x39 rounds, and as a result the .223 AK's tend to be a lot more accurate than your average AK. They're also newer, of course, which usually means better tolerances. A .223 AK is really the best of both worlds.

I own one, my Saiga .223. Love it.

i would buy it especially if its the chinese variant in .223, these things shoot awesome, the trigger is actually better than my stock bm ar15 and my vz58
heres my ak variant mak90 .223

I bought a 223/5.56 for the cheaper 223/5.56 ammo at the time.

All Chinese 223/5.56 mm rifles will take ak-74 magazines if you only load 20 rounds, or you can swap out the followers with ROBARM followers to have 30 rds.

How many magazines do you really need? 10? 20? Buy them while you can.
