Would you have paid 90 bucks for this?

So I took it out shooting and it doesn't seem to like Federal cheap ammo. It fired Buckshot and slugs fine but the Federal didn't want to cycle to well. About one in every 5 wouldn't eject properly. Are the Federal shells longer? I am thinking that is the problem.

No. I would have bought ammo with those ninety dollars, yet I do not think you paid too much. Enjoy shooting your new gun, you surely did not buy it for its good looks.

I would have bought. It would make a nice shotgun to keep in your trunk or stashed elsewhere or at a vacation home, etc.

Was it worth $90? Probably. But did you need it? I see old pump guns like this for $75-$125 all the time around here, so it would have to be one I actually wanted. There are quite literally hundreds of thousands of these old department store shotguns floating around in the US.

There's miles between getting an item you need/want on the cheap and buying something because it is cheap. The latter is how hoarding begins; compulsive bargain shoppers end up with houses full of junk that ultimately costs them more than the sum of the dollars spent on individual items. Just keep that in mind when perusing the bargain racks.

That said, don't take this to mean universally that you shouldn't jump on a screamin' deal on something you don't need or want; there are certainly times when something comes along that you just can't pass up because you can easily profit flipping it.

Back in the 80s/early 90s, Remington was making 3" that, once fired, was too long for the Mossberg's ejection port and would hang up on ejection. I just switched to other brands. I was shooting 3" number one steel at the time, was before the advent of fasteel loads which work much better in 2 3/4" than did the old steel loads.

Anyway, IMHO, yes, that federal could be the problem, might be too long for the ejection port. Try another brand of cheap ammo, maybe Remington or Winchester, though Winchester is fraught with its own problems in some guns.

The Hi-Standard you bought is a very nice shotgun, and one of the smoothest pumps ever produced. Mossberg used much of the design to make their 500 series guns.

They are 2&3/4 chambered guns so do not shoot 3 inch out of them. Polish the chamber with a brass brush wrapped in 4 ought steel wool driven be a hand drill. Don't get carried away. The sticky extraction is more related to the ammo than it is the gun but a nice clean and smooth chamber helps.

A great value for $90 .

I've got my grandfathers old JC Higgens. The only complaint I have is that if you pump it too fast, you will see a pile of shells at your feet.
