Would you pay $480.00 for a 317?

There is a 317 airweight older prelock not sure on the dash # Comes with the original box. It is a 8 shot fixed sighted snub not sure i want to lay that much cash for a fixed sighted gun sure wish it was one of the very rare adjustable sighted ones. It is a consignment gun so that is my OTD price. I hate these conundrums I am always afraid as soon as I buy it there will be something I want more and then be short of cash. Opinions please.

Well, I paid about $330 new for mine in 1998.

And it was worth every penny of it!

The fixed sights are not a hardship on mine because it shoots where it looks, as accurately as I can hold a 2" 10 oz pistol.

MSRP on a new one now is $759, so $480 doesn't sound that bad.

One thing though.
The early ones like mine had horrendously heavy DA triggers, like close to 20 pounds!

A Wolff spring kit is the first thing you might be shopping for if someone didn't already.

I think they are great. Probably got mine around 2000-2001 and can't remember what I paid for it. Always been impressed with how solid it is for such a lightweight revolver. Mine has the adjustable sight, but I don't think I've touched it from the factory. It seems to be well regulated to the ammo I've used to date.

I bought 3 for a tad under $500 ea. One for my wife, 2" "lady Smith" deluxe grips, case and tuned, and two with 3"bbl & adj sites for my son and I.

Allot of fun but not all that accurate compared to a S&W model 18.

Thanks for the opinions I think I will pass as it will probably be to small for my hands and I am generally not a fan of the J frames.

last pre lock 317-3" .22lr sold on gunbroker for $900.
i was amazed.

with lock go for 550-650. little cheaper for the <2" barrel version

No!

For an older Model 18, or 34 maybe.

Only if I specifically needed the light weight really badly.

Even then I'd feel better about $450... and a LOT better about $400.


Pricing is pretty wonky right now though, so I can't say for sure. This is just from my point of view as a current 317 owner. I paid over $600 new, so the $480 isn't as unrealistic as it might seem at first glance.

I had one and sold it, one of the few times I have sold with no regret. The trigger was 20lbs and it would not reliably eject, this is a very common issue with 317's. rather than deal with it I sold it for $500, also I did not like the v notch rear sight.

I also have an 18, 617, 651 and 63 so I am familiar with s&w 22lrs.

I would try the new ruger lcr or look for an older 34 or 43.

I did not like the v notch rear sight.

The early ones like the OP ask about, and like mine, did not have a V-notch rear sight.

They had square notch sights like any other older J-Frame pre-Glow-Worm front sights you can't hit anything with.

And they also had no ejection problems that I have ever seen so far in 15 years.

I already mentioned the heavy DA trigger, and how to fix it for a few bucks with a Wolff spring kit.
