Would You Trade A Colt Python?

I give my left nut for a $500 Python. Take a look at gunbroker and see what Pythons are going for. I've been offered $600 for my lowly Colt dick special.

I think you made the right choice in keeping the Python and saving for the 686. At 80% finish you probably shouldn't worry too much about carrying the Python since that is what you want (especially since you plan to get the 686 eventually).

As for the $500 as a lowball price, I don't think the salesman didn't know what he was talking about, he was giving a price the shop might give for it (they will want to make a nice profit when they turn around to sell it). If they were giving the consignment asking price, they might be nuts. OK, it is more a shooter than a collector gun, but it is still a Python.

While I don't necessarily object to Majic calling a Python a Rolls Royce, I do object to the 686 being compared to the Taurus. I've owned a Taurus and a 686 both, and I'd say more like a Camry or Accord.

Anyway, if the finish on your Python is really only 80%, for all practical purposes, you can forget the idea of holding on to it as a collectible. Real Python collectors wouldn't give it a second look. You're actually in a great situation. Many people would love to shoot their pythons but are afraid of hurting the gorgeous finish and/or losing collectors value. You don't have to worry about that. Shoot the heck out of it and enjoy it. Buy a 686 when you can.
