would you trust a 9mm conversion in a .357 sig?

I understand that you can get a 9mm conversion barrel from Bar-sto for a Sig 229 in .357 sig. I have also heard that while they work fine, some won't use the conversion barrel for CCW or uniform carry. If they work well, why aren't they trusted. Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks.

I got a 9mm conversion barrel from bar-sto for my 2340 (Originally a 357SIG), and it rocks, it's as reliable as the real thing.
The thing is, the breechface was meant for the case head dimensions of the .40/357SIG, the extractor holds the round in place not by pinning it to the breechface, but by the hook itself.
Basically what I'm saying is, SIG wouldn't make that conversion unless the slide was changed with the barrel.
I personally would get the gun I wanted, but the conversion is still awesome for target practice.
I love my bar-sto conversion barrel, and wouldn't part with it willingly.

Because the casehead diameter is larger in the .357SIG than the 9mm the extractor isn't going to engage the rim as positively as it would the rim of a .357SIG cartridge.

It will work very well most of the time, but it's not an ideal setup.

Most people like their carry set up to be as reliable as possible. Lives are kind of hard to replace.

Besides, WHY, WHY, WHY would you buy a .357SIG gun and then carry it loaded with 9mm? 9mm guns are usually cheaper and buying a conversion barrel is expensive. You could have saved a lot of money by just getting a 9mm in the first place...

Ditto on practicing with the 9mm conversion barrel, carry the 357SIG, if you want a 9mm, get a 228.

I want to get a 9mm barrel for my 2340 as well ; I was hoping EAK would release theirs as it's should be a bit cheaper than Bar-Sto and therefore easier to justify . I don't have any reason to need it any more than I have any real reason to need 11 handguns but if I already have the .357 and .40 barrels I might as well have the trifecta . I don't have any need to own my HK4 and I have more capable guns for any *useful* purposes than it but I just think it's nifty that I can have 3 guns in one . I guess I'm just a sucker for novelty value but I could see some merit in using the 9mm to train and practice with if one shot a considerable amount with 9mm being close to 1/2 the price of .357 .

Yes! Practicing with a 9mm bbl makes a lot of sense (if you're going to shoot enough to make up the cost of the conversion barrel). A jam every so often at the range is an annoyance--nothing more. A jam in a carry situation is another story altogether.

I have a 9mm conversion barrel for my XD-357 Sig which works great (available at xd-gear for $150). I haven't had any problems but limit my use of the conversion barrel for practice. Being able to practice with less expensive ammunition using the exact same gun is a worth while investment to me.

when you say trust what do you mean?

some pistols you can take a whole upper 9mm assembly and put it on the 40S&W/357sig version. ie Steyr maybe glock not sure who else.

barrel conversion for self defense would depend on how good the extractor fit is on 9mm. also how reliable it proves.
