Yesterday I made a big trip to the range with pretty much my whole collection and fire off some older ammo I'd had sitting around. Once I finished I bought a box of .45 ammo since I had none at home. Well, apparently I walked out of the range without it because once I got home I realized I had zero ammo in the house. I kinda made me nervous to have a bunch of empty guns. Finally I found a single shotgun shell that I had to take out to get the box closed before I went shooting. I loaded the shotgun and set it next to my bed.

How sad is that? I'll be hitting the sporting goods store later today.

I've done that, but not anymore

If I shoot my carry gun or home defense gun, I take the defenseive load out and shoot FMJ . The JHP goes back in the gun and the carry gun back on my hip before I leave the range for home. Home defense and carry guns get cleaned immediatly on arrival home.

Even if I rotate (shoot) my defense load, I'd feel naked not loading the defensive guns with something. Getting caught between the range and home with a empty (but dirty) gun would be hard to justify.

Paranoid is when you always have one concealed gun on you at that range that you don't shoot or reveal at all--just in case you need it.

Paranoid?

Someone posted a while back not sure if it was this forum but they said.{If your not "paranoid maybe your not paying attention"}:uhoh:

Luckily I have never been in your shoes. I usually shoot pistols on one range trip and rifles on the next trip. That insures that I have enough ammo sitting around. Oh and Captain the whole hidden gun at the range probably isn't a bad idea.

hidden gun at the range ...

I did the range thing yesterday with a .40 and and a .22 and never took the .380 out from under my shirt.

You are only paranoid before an event, afterwards you 'were' remarkably well prepared.

Nothing wrong with what you did.

I ALWAYS have at least a .380 on me.

What you need is to have enough ammunition so that you cannot possibly shoot it all in one range trip.

When we shoot out in the desert i always carry a pistol loaded and shoot the others, then i reload with carry ammo and shoot the one i was carrying. As to having an empty pistol i have done that once! Never again.

Having guns and no ammo would bother me big time. Ammo is like my security blanket. Sometimes I visit my ammo stored in various undisclosed locations within my domestic premises simply for the purpose of getting "warm fuzzies". YMMV :D

I bought a .45-70 a couple years ago, paid for the thing and walked out to the car. I then realized I didn't have any ammo for it and sat in the car for about 2 minutes, debating whether to get some ammo even though I didn't plan to shoot it for 2 or 3 months. Finally, it just bugged me too much to have a gun with no ammo (even though there were plenty of other guns and lots of ammo at home), so I went back in the store and bought 2 boxes.

So, yeah, I understand the feeling.

I keep at least a couple boxes of ammo for each caliber at home at all times. I even have a few boxes of ammo in calibers I no longer have a gun for.

That would definitely make me uncomfortable to have guns but no ammo for them. :uhoh:

Even if I thought I was completely out of ammo, I bet I could scrounge up a load of something just by hunting up the loose rounds in my car and the oods and ends throughout the house. I don't know what it would be: a cylinder of mixed .357 and .38's, a half mag of .308 or maybe one or two rounds each of three or four different calibers. I can see me loading up 3 or 4 guns with two rounds each just to feel better.

Of course, I really stopped being completely out of ammo about the time I started buying by the case instead of by the box.

I was out once introducing my Bro in Law to shooting....we were about 1/2 way thru...when up comes 2 guys in a Ford Ranger....I got REAL paranoid fast. They got out and was asking questions...and wanted to watch....I didnt want to turn my back on them...and my bro in law wasnt competent enough to be able to do anything at this point in his new hobby..:)

I normally shoot/practice with my carry gun (Glock 23) and I pull the carry mags (2 -13 rounders) out and load up the Klinton 10 rounders I have...I use theose for practice. I keep the 2 loaded 13 rounders in the pocket of my cargo shorts...just in case Im not right next to the truck to do a reload if such a situation occurs....so these guys are making me real nervous...even though Im loaded to the hilt...I just kept the 23 concealed and loaded...and loaded up the 10 rounders while they were talking...never taking my eyes off them...I told my bro in law, "lets wrap it up and go...Im done"...and they finally left...

I ALWAYS keep one loaded no matter what now...wether its the AR or a pistol..

I use a .45acp 100rd value pack as a paperweight on my computer desk. The 10 ammo cans littered around the room make sure the carpet wont blow away during a tornado. I doubt I'll ever be in your shoes. :)

I run short of target ammo all the time - state slaves don't get paid much. BUT, carry ammo is always rotated every 6 months, old stuff relegated to training or "stash", and carry mags are always full up with HydraShoks. The only thing I don't have JHP for is the Mosin - got Czech steel core for that.....
