Stay Armed

I shoot at a state land open area south of Green Valley Arizona, just past I19, exit 56. A few weeks ago, I had a Border Patrol truck come flying up to me while I was shooting my P99. I pointed it at the ground and the officer really surprised me when he said “Make sure you stay armed down hereâ€. I asked him to clarify and he did. He meant that I should never have an empty weapon in this area of the desert. I had my loaded Kimber 1911 on my hip at the time and he pointed at it and said “That is what I meanâ€. The problem is the large number of illegals smuggling drugs and people down here. I not only keep a loaded gun on my hip but I also have my wife carrying her pistol covering my back. She is a better shot than I am anyway. LOL

True story....

I sometimes carry Mrs. AZLib's Walther PPK when I'm looking for something more discreet than my Glock23. At the time of this story, our kids were younger, so I always stored the guns unloaded in the safe. I always like to have a full magazine "+1"--especially with a .380--in addition to a reload magazine. So on this day, I put on my holster and magazine carrier, inserted the magazine into the gun, chambered the round, released the magazine, added my "+1" round to the top of the magazine, and left the house.

It wasn't until I came home and was putting the Walther away that I noticed that I had never put the magazine back into the gun after adding the extra round. The magazine was sitting right on top of the gun safe. I had been walking around with only the one round in the chamber, and no magazine in the gun (although I did have the extra magazine on my hip).

:uhoh:  :uhoh:  :uhoh:  :uhoh:

It was scary to think how I'd have reacted to a 'problem' with what amounts to a single-shot .380. I do things quite differently now.

BTW, I also don't leave the range having shot up everything I had with me. I either keep my carry ammo ready to go for the trip home, or have a loaded gun that stays ready to use for the entire time I'm at the range.

Yes, logistically challenged, not paranoid.

You wouldn't leave a motor cycle in your drive way out of gas and think you were nuts for feeling odd, would you? I wouldn't. What if you really wanted to ride it suddenly? What if you really NEEDED to ride it? A little gas to keep things running never hurt anybody. It's useless without it.

Same for your guns. For a few months after buying my first pistols I'd typically have no more than two magazines worth the ammo around the house. I'd shoot up a box or two every other week I guess and replenish. This was the summer of 2001. I was using cheap Winchester JHP's in my 9mm for HD (well, not USING, but keeping around).

Now? Well.... I've got 14 calibers to shoot from 16 firearms. I buy my military main rifle calibers by the case. My pistol ammo I pick up in chucks of 250 value-packs sometimes two at a time. I'd say I've got around 3,000 or 4,000 rounds of ammo around here right now. Small fish for THR, I know :) About 2 and a half years ago I thought it was NUTS that I had 300 rounds of ammo in my place -- 100 rounds of 12 gauge, 100 of 9mm, and 100 of .45ACP.

You're not paranoid. You just have a logistics problem. Buy enough groceries for a week or two (food goes bad) -- buy enough ammo for a year. Ammo doesn't go bad.

Paranoid is when you always have one concealed gun on you at that range that you don't shoot or reveal at all--just in case you need it.

What? Doesn't everyone do this?

More like logistically challenged

Logistically challenged is when you have budget to buy ammo for 1 gun only, but you own 100.

That's just poor planning and number counting.. But everybody's been there before... You need to establish the concept of "The secret stash"...

;)

I always carry a gun I don't plan to shoot when I go to the range. I keep 6 30 round mags loaded in a mag pouch for my AK-47. The ammo gets shot up and replaced and the mags get rotated every 6 months. I keep 4 mags for my Kimber loaded all the time. I have a shoulder bandoleer (?) with 25 rounds of buckshot for my 12 gauge pump.I keep at least 100 rounds for every caliber I own. I also keep a SHTF back pack loaded with rations, water, a gps, a compass, a first aid kit, a knife, and a few "surprises."
Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

Ever since I bluffed my way out of a car jacking with a unloaded PPK ten years ago I have always left one mag loaded at all times .

Out of 7 firearms that I currently own, there is only one that I don't have any ammo for. That is a family heirloom that I haven't had time to restore yet, so I don't have ammo for it yet.

Of the others, every single one has plenty of ammo.

Lets see, about 50 rounds of .380 JHP
300 rounds of 9mm, 100 JHP, 200 FMJ
350 7.62X39 HP
1000+ .308
100 12ga.
And at least 500 in .22lr.
Not to mention .357 mag, which I don't even have the pistol anymore, I still have a few boxes of JHP laying around.

I keep the .380 and the 9mm loaded, 2 extra mags for the .380, 1 extra for the 9mm, the shotgun is loaded with buckshot, with buck and slugs on the side saddle, 200 rounds of 7.62x39 on stripper clips for the SKS, and at least 100 rounds loaded into 20rnd mags for the CETME.

I'm not paranoid, I am prepared :D

I.G.B.

I thoguht it was William S. Burroughs who said "Being paranoid means having all the facts..." Ah well--since the wording's different, we're probably both right. :)

I've always got a 30-rounder of 7.62x39 loaded up for the AK "just in case..."

I don't think you're paranoid at all.

Consider this: Even if you're on a club range, when you walk downrange to change your target, you have at least one gun lying in the open on the bench.

Whenever I go to the range (my gun club) I have either my Colt with 2 extra mags of Hydra-Shok, or my G22 with one extra mag of RA40T holstered and concealed.

I never go shooting in the wild alone. Usually I take a good friend with me; he usually brings at least two rifles, one of which is loaded and slung at all times.

God and I think I am low on ammo if I only have a 1000 rounds left for each gun I have. :p

Ammoless

I had to move out of my house while it was being rebuilt(a fire) and put all of my guns in storage. We were in the condo about two minutes when I realized I had no guns.I jumped in the car went to the storage facility and got the only two guns I could get without creating a mess,an Enfield NO.4mk1 and a S&W640 .38 then I went to the local sporting goods store and got abox of .38s and 40 rounds of .303.
Maybe I'm paranoid too but it sure Made me feel better.

Dume,

Welcome to the board. :)

I will do my best to hit the driver of such a car in the back of the head, and then finish off the passenger ASAP. The world can get along just without such "people".

Now please tell me this is a joke.
