How bad is it to use a #10 cap in a blackpowder gun designed for a #11 (a Pietta "Confederate" Colt Navy)? I just got the proper size caps and will (hopefully) try them this weekend. On a dry fitting test they go over the nipples rather easily, compared to the #10s which I had to gently force them in.

Now, when the #10s fired, they usually would spread out in many different ways, either around the nipple or falling in between the cylinder and frame. But, in the end of the day the result was the same: could only fire one shot at a time, with the rest of the time was to remove the used cap off the revolver before, well, revolving it.

What brand of caps are they?
The different brands have skirts of different designs which can cause them to expand differently.
There seems to be more complaints about the CCI's while the Remington's are more favored.
A snug fitting cap is more desirable.
As long they ignite with the first hammer hit then the #10's are not too snug so the problem could be the brand of caps.
There's other possible remedies too, but the brand of caps could possibly be the problem instead of their size.

Interesting you mentioned CCI; that is exactly the brand I have for the #10's

For the #11 I just happened to have bought the Remington's; I am glad to know I did well.

I hope that the Remington #11's aren't too loose for your nipples.
The main difference between the Remington #10's & #11's is the length of the skirt.
The #10's have a longer skirt that extends further down the cone for a more snug fit where it tapers.
Although it's not quite so cut and dry.
Good luck and let us know how the Remington #11's work out so that we can better advise the next Pietta Colt owner. :)

I have a tin of #10 CCI's that I got from a local gunshop. They won't fit anything I have, Colt or Remmey..Got a case of #10's Remington's from Cabelias fit like a glove, never had any problems.Just for fun I picked up a package of #11 from Wally Worlds and they to fit like a glove, I suspect they are made by CCI.

If I may...

Recently I purchased Treso cones for my 1851 Navy in .44. I expected Remington # 11 caps to fit snug and go bang without fail... they slipped right off. Feeling a bit unsafe with the situation, I am using Remington # 10 that I use with my stock cones. The #10's fit as I expected. Do I need to let them get roughed up from use?

Warmest regards,

If I read correctly, the Treso cones are designed for Remington #11's. Some time ago I had a couple of tins of CCI # 10's, I got rid of them because they did not fit anything I had.

Warmest regards,

Large caps are easily and symmetrically re-sized using a small socket from a ¼'' ratchet set. Either a 5/32” or 4mm size will work.

Simply place cap on hard flat surface open side up and apply downward force with the socket. A gentle tap may be required. If the re-sized cap resists being removed from the socket gently grab it with pliers and rock it back and forth.

I modified my socket slightly with a pointed stone on a Dremel tool to provide a forcing cone of sorts.

Actually #10`s are for pistols & #11`s are for rifles (supposedly).........

Not so much any more I'm afraid.

Each gun is going to have its own preferences. The only caps I can ever find are CCI's and they work on all but one of my guns, luckily not one I'm inclined to shoot very often.

I have found that without exception on the ones I've replaced with Treso or Stainless all the aftermarket nipples have taken the CCI #11's well. On the other hand the stock nipples whether they're on ASM, Pietta or the over worshipped Uberti don't really have much continuity regarding size. Some like 10's, some like 11's. You may have to do some searching to either find the cap that yours likes or replace with higher grade cones.

yeper...............

In the 80's I liked Dynamite Nobles but after coming back to shooting Black Powder looks like nada no more

At the risk of getting yet another lecture with copyrighted drawings:

That is insane. All the caps but the Remington 11 are about the same size. And, the Rem 11 is the shortest one by a large margin. Scary! Now I have 100 of them. I do need to try it out.

I tried CCI and they go to pieces. Remington 10's work best for me, but are very hard to find. I need to try their 11's as they are easy to get.

Point your muzzle straight up while cocking the hammer and the spent cap will fall off free and not get caught in the cylinder. Most of the time :D

Works for me

You are in NE FL? I am in Gainesville. You are welcome to grab a few of my Remington 11's and try it out... in the name of Science!

Specially if you know of a place I can try my fumigator out too ;)

Quick update: this Sunday I finally had the opportunity to try the Remington 11s in my Pietta "Confederate" Colt Navy. Those caps work rather nicely without trying to fall off or get stuck. So, I am happy
