When I bought caps for my revolvers a few months ago, it was the first time I had done it. And at the time,I didnt know pietta revolvers were designed for #10 caps. So I messed up. I ordered #11 caps from cabelas.
5000 of them.
Now, I have fired them in all my revolvers. Only problem I had was with my 1858 with 28gr loads. The first shot, all the other caps were off the nipples.
Are there any other reasons I need to be concerned about using the #11's?
And can what happened with my 1858 cause a chain fire?

A lot of people used to think chain fires were caused from the front end, but there seems good reason to believe a significant number can happen from the rear if sparks get under an adjacent capped nipple. We know the caps themselves produce enough of a flash to do this; a number of still shots have been posted here that show sparks flying out from the hammer/nipple area.
You can try squeezing the caps to keep them on, but I really suggest you get some #10 caps.
Uberti guns usually take #11 size caps, Piettas #10. But they also make replacement nipples (often of higher quality than factory nipples) and getting correct replacement nipples is another possible route.

Pinching them in with your fingers before pushing them on seems to be the consensus around here. Regarding Uberti's, all 5 of mine fire fine with # 10's! Just a firm seating with my thumb.

Order 5000 Remington #10 caps from here and you can forget about those 5 extra tins in the wrong size for a while:

Same place has a decent price on Speer .375 RB:

I think I still have 1 tin of CCI#11 around the house and ordered 5k from above. If you can source locally you probably save on Hazmat. Maybe see if your local gun shop will add this qty to a hazmat order he's planning in the future.

sorry drobs. That was a typo. It was 5000 #11's I ordered. Not 500.
Thanks for the links. I'll bookmark them. Right now all my spending money has gone to a new leather working tool kit, border stamp kit and more leather.
my local gun shop stopped carrying ANY black powder related products due to hazmat storage restrictions and charges. Now I have to drive over an hour and a half to the nearest dealer that carries them. Better off for me to just order them and pay the hazmat charges.

Doh! In that case, I'd get some new nipples. Track of the Wolf lists some that specifically fit CCI#11. I'd call em just to double check.

Now that I can do! For that price I'll go ahead and order enough to change all of them out!
But which would I be better off getting? The hardened steel or stainless steel?

If there are other percussion gun enthusiasts in your acquaintance, you could offer them those #11s at a discount, just to recover part of your investment. Or perhaps take them to a dealer or a gun show...

I've use CCI #11s for sometime now on all of my pieces. I did the opposite ordered, 1000 #10s by accident , they work on some guns not on others. Too bad we don't have a way of swapping off a thousand. The One thousand Remington #11s I ordered at the same time,( I keep reading how the Remington's are better,) as the CCIs are ok, but seems every tin has a few empty ones with the primer bits loose on the bottom of the tin. I shoot enough that the thousand will be gone in due time, so I'll stick to the CCIs in the future.

I'll just repeat what I said recently in another thread...
If you file down the end of the nipples just a bit, it will snug up the caps since the nipples are cones and will end up having a larger OD at the end.

If you adjusted one set of nipples, you could use them in multiple revolvers. It doesn't hurt to pull them out and clean them anyway.

Somewhere out here there is a sight with dimensions and pictures of different caps. You will see that the main difference between 10s and 11s is that 10s are longer therefor go farther down the cone to tighten. I have found that the way Remington caps are formed allows # 10 to spread when forced on (I use a short dowel), this makes them the most versatile.

I assume these aren’t the standard CCI #11’s, right? Either the Rem #11’s or CCI #11 Magnums?

Track of The Wolf nipples are designed for standard CCI #11’s. I have a set but can’t ever find the standard #11’s. Happens to work out that Rem #10’s fit perfectly and are easy enough to find. Still curious to try the CCI’s though, but don’t want to have to buy 1000 to offset the Hazmat (and I have about 900 Rems anyway).

#11 seem to be the most common, I would switch to #11 nipples and keep the 10s as spares. I personally haven't seen #10 caps on a store shelf in years. But I tend to stick to small towns rather than big cities so I am limiting my shopping experience. Went to Salt Lake yesterday and it scared the bejesus outta me and the wife.

I pinch 'em. Somewhere here we have the measurements of different maker caps.
