My uncle was a BAR man serving with the Marines during the Korean War. I asked him once if they used any sort of hearing protection. He said "nope, that's why I wear these" pointing to his hearing aids.
In '64 or there abouts I volunteered for the Navy and took the military physical. I was branded 1Y for hearing loss and turned down. One wonders why, in hind sight, if they were going to make you deaf anyway. The hearing loss was due to rifle firing without hearing protection as a teen ager.
