I bought a few of the SD1s a while ago when Cold Steel had a holiday sale and ended up giving all but one away - they are just too big to carry under most circumstances (but make great stocking stuffers!). They didn't offer the SD2 at the time, but that seems like a more reasonable size. The material they are made of isn't very dense, so you don't give up much in the way of mass by going with the smaller one. Plus the pointy end seems as if it would be more effective since it weighs so little.

In the end, I don't think it makes much difference which pocket stick/Yawara/koppo you choose. The keys to effectiveness are accessibility and training.

Hello ndh87,

Yawaras are easily made from just about anything from a rolled up magazine (very easy to find, create and deploy) to pvc, to a wooden dowel, to the koga. When using a dowel its easily carried, inconspicuous and disposable. Me, I perfer to carry a fighting cane, anyway a Yawara is primarily a center gripped fighting tool. A fist load with two outer pointed striking surfaces. Today It's deployed in a manner of multiple strikes to "cut down" your opponenet.

Check this site out:)

A lot of folding knives work great as a yawara, with the option of a blade if you need one.

Look for the Spyderco Gunting. I do not think they are still being made but you may be able to find one one Bladeforums or ebay.
