What are some crazy misconceptions and misinterpretations of gun laws or perceived gun laws you have heard others spout? I know there's a ton of misinformation out there regarding speeding tickets, etc. (I hear it all the time) but what about gun laws? Yesterday I had a guy tell me that you aren't responsible for any shooting that takes place within the first 15 seconds after you wake up. :uhoh:

If you shoot someone in your yard, you should drag them into the house and stick a knife in their hand to avoid indictment/prosecution.

A rifle with a pistol grip, detachable magazine, folding stock, and/or flashhider is FAR more dangerous than a rifle without any of the aforementioned. Same applies to pistols with threaded barrels... :scrutiny:

A gun owner once told me that some gun control laws are lawful and constitutional. I got a chuckle out of that.

I had this crusty old guy who was trying to get us to leave the range by going on about how he "hates military rifles" and that my FAL was less accurate than a brown bess tell us that all of our guns are registered. Maybe the 4473's (which is not a registry per se) are still on file but how did he know we didn't buy them privately?

We ignored him, kept shooting and eventually he left. We surmised that he was trying to get us to leave so that he would have the range to himself.

Invariably when non gun folk find out I own guns the first questions are either "Do you have a license?" and/or "Are they registered?"

Of course the first time you show these people an EBR their eyes get big and they ask in hushed tones "...is...is that thing even legal?"

Its funny because 90% of the gun control laws we here are fighting against, most of the sheep think are already laws. :neener:

Most people could not be more convinced that owning a full automatic gun or a silencer is illegal by definition.

laws for everything

There had been an archaic portion of the PA Crime Code that declared: "it shall be illegal to discharge a bazooka rocket into the window of a moving motor vehicle."

I would love to find a historic record of just how and why this one is on the books.

That reminds me of a section from the MSU Night Receptionist training manual, "What to do if a resident / guest of resident begins spraying hallways with a fire extinguisher."

My boss tells me that one was pretty interesting.

A CCW premit obligates you to intervene in any crime committed in your presence

The Fla "Stand Your ground Law" gives you the right to shoot merely if you feel threatened or that it somehow lessens the burden on you to prove that you had to use deadly force.

But Joab,

That dosen't matter, because in Florida you have a "License to Murder" and you could "Shoot the Avon Lady" and the police couldn't do anything.

Any bullet, or gun that can fire said bullet, that is capable of puncturing any kind of body armor has been specifically designed and manufactured by extremely evil people that want nothing more than to sell them to criminals to be used to kill police officers in large numbers and MUST be banned outright and completely. They even have a name for them "Cop Killers", oh they are so clever. :D

* guns and gun manufactureres are responsible for all gun related deaths.
* you don't need to own a gun -- the police will protect you (hear this one on almost daily basis from a boneheaded liberal cow-orker).
* militias are a bunch of redneck living in the woods planning to overthrough the government.
* militias are right-wing terrorists.
* states with loose ccw laws have higher murder rates (didn't even try to argue with that one)
* countries with strict gun control laws have lower crime rates (yeah: russia, mexico, all central america, uk, france and so on have virtually no crime)
* banning handguns will stop gun related crime (Chris Daly, SF supervisor, i wonder if he ever developed mentally past 14 years old)
* if you own a handgun you will end up shooting yourself, your spouse/girlfriend, your relative, your kids will shoot themselves, your dog will be shot and so on.

many more... pretty sad...

No Bazooka's eh?

What about an AT4 or M72?

South Dakota used to have a law that stated when you relased a man from jail after more that five years you had to give him a horse, saddle and .30-30 rifle.

SW

If you use an EBR in self defense, you'll be convicted of murder.

If you carry a reload, the cops will beat you for being a homicidal maniac. You'll then be sentenced to life in prison for something.

If you carry two firearms and only use one in self defense, the prosecution will use the presence of the second firearm to show you are a depraved individual with no self control.

Hollowpoints and FMJ ammunition will both get you sent to prison because they are evil.
