Okiecruffler, I LOVE your #1 answer! I, too, have a stainless super 14" in .223 and have done the same many times. Some get all big-eyed and will simply put their gear up and go home when they see how small the group is at 100 yds with that handgun! I love it! Sometimes it is a guy with mucho big bucks invested in a gun in some large exotic caliber and high dollar scope who believes that money and high grade equipment will make up for all his shooting errors in the field.Much more often it is the guy with the lever gun that he can't hold on a 5-gallon bucket at 75 yds though.
I also use it for varmits, etc. Works WELL.
I only have one other. It is a stainless 14" in 30-30 win that shoots almost as well. I deer hunt with it. Have taken several and it is VERY effective.
Those 14" 223 barrels are just wicked accurate. I have 2 loads, one full power and one reduced Blue Dot load, that will consistantly shoot 5 shot 1/2MOA groups. I've never had a rifle that will even come close to that kind of accuracy.
I am not in any way gonna give Cruffler a run for his money - that'd be impossible!
I currently have that 14" .223 barrel - and that gets used most - it is ''disgustingly'' accurate - so much so I think I can group better with that than my Ruger 77 MkII! It is shere bliss to shoot and even factory ammo (WWB) does remarkably well.
I also have the .44 mag barrel, 12" - and that does now and again get an airing - probably not enough! Pics below - same frame of course but just a barrel change.
I have 12 10" barrels about half octagon and half bull in the following cals: 22LR, 22 K Hornet, 223, 25-35, 30 Herret, 32 H&R Mag, 357 Maximum, 357 Herret, 10MM, 45 Colt, 45 Win Mag. I have 5 Super 14 barrels in the following cals: 22LR, 6.5 TCU, 357 Herret, 41 Mag, and 45 Win Mag. And I only have 2 frames! The 6.5 TCU is currently in a very tight race with my XP 100 in 7MM BR for the most accurate handgun I own.
Right now I'm saving up for a custom barrel. Originally it was going to be a 300 Whisper, but then I got the idea to use 357max brass instead of 221 for a rimmed case. If things go as planned I should have it in my grubby little hands by Novemeber. Only problem with the Contender is that it's sucking up all of my C&R money. OkieContender just doesn't have the same ring to it.
New owner bought out the local gun store. Previous owner was way overloaded on Contenders. New owner wanted to dump 'em. Thru trading, haggling, and excessive use of personal charm, I managed to buy three complete guns. One was .35 Remington, and two were .357 Herrett. Had $475 in all three
Ended up selling two (the .35 Remington and one .357) for $575, so the other one only cost me...... Oh wait...I made $100
One of the local "experts" told me the .357 Herrett was one of the hardest kicking pistols he'd ever shot. Dunno what loads he had, but mine's fine. I've got a 2x Leo scope I took off my .44 M29. I've hit blackbirds at 80-100 yards. Plenty big for deer and probably most things bigger.
Nice thing is, another local shop was cleaning out bullets (Hornady, Sierra) for $3 per 100. I bought all 18 boxes
14 inch .223 barrel. I've been trying to come up with one load that is super accurate in it and my Ruger 77V. I've come close but haven't found it yet. That's the fun of reloading.
Larry - amazes me that the 55 grain fmj WWB shoots extraordinarily well outa my 14" and the 45 grain WWB varmint load does pretty well outa the Ruger 77 - not perfect but, for factory ammo - not half bad. I have yet myself tho to perfect the most ideal handload.
Ranger - sorry no more barrels until you have frame #3!
might want to check out the .357 Herrett if you're looking for a .35 caliber. The ballistics vs grains of powder is very impressive. Very efficient and nice to shoot.
When I traded for mine, I was going to sell it, but after doing some checking I decided to keep it. Glad I did. HTH
only one, a 10 in. 30/30 with a red dot. is a hoot to shoot. other ppl want to talk about contenders and shoot mine. i always comply and they are always impressed. i want and would have other bbls. but i always find another gun i want more than another bbl. the 30/30 is a sweetheart and i would hate to put it aside for a rifle caliber in a 14 in. bbl. afraid i would get used to sub moa groups and not use the trusty 30/30 bbl. again. i get close to moa with the red dot and think i could get an occasional one with crosshairs. red dots for older eyes yunno
